scenedicate #2 - looking for coders!
category: general [glöplog]
scenedicate was the world's first real console diskmag, released December 2005 for the Sega Dreamcast.
In 2006 and 2007, we tried hard to work on a new issue, had content and new graphics ready, made the music. But unfortunately our coder disappeared and never ever came back. I have had no contact to him since that day and won't even reply to mails. With him, also all the source codes are gone and we had to start from scratch.
Late 2007 and 2008, we had coder who wanted to help us out. But never really came to something.
Therefor - with this thread - I would like to ask directly if someone has the time and motivation to participate. With this project, we have so many stories to tell, so much motivation. But no C / C++ coder. Feel free to contact me here or at scenedicate@gmx.net
Tasks:
- Graphical menu that displays texts, pictures and plays OGG music
- Scrolling down and up through the digital pad
- Possibility to start external programs

Why not create a website to post all these stories? Should be somewhat simpler and it allows the non-dreamcast owning public (i.e. everyone ever) to read the articles as well.
Indeed you're right that posting the articles on the internet would give more attention and also attracts a larger audience.
However, the whole scenedicate concept was always something special. As you can see in scenedicate #1, we had - for example - interviews with the original "Inherit The Earth" creator and a member of the ScummVM team. Additionally, the latest ScummVM for Dreamcast version and a playable demo of Inherit The Earth was attached to the article. Also you could start Dreamcast demos in scenedicate.
scenedicate should also be a bit of advertising for the demoscene among videogamers. On the other hand, this was one of the very few ressources for "console demosceners" and we had a report about a console / handheld only demoscene party in Sweden for example.
And as a third point: This was kind of a gift for all loyal Dreamcast users. Demosceners as well as gamers and coders.

Valid points, but now I would like to read the ScummVM interview as well! Can I do that, without stealing a DreamCast? (*)
(*) Is it stealing, or is it my human right to own a DreamCast? Discuss.

Yes you can. There are fully functional emulators out there. And you even get Dreamcasts on eBay for about 30 - 40 EUR incl. all cables and pads.
Why not just compress the articles with PkPAK 1.0? I'm pretty sure that's hard to come by these days..
Pardon me? Do you mean the compression tool? How could help us that in any way?
However: Sorry to be direct, but we're looking here for a C / C++ coder. Not other distribution options. We're pretty clear about how scenedicate will continue. Or if everything fails: How it won't continue.

why?
See Sceendicate #1 :)
Yeti: Because it's possible. And you can try it out without burning another and another and another CD-R for each program. And videogamers with no clue about the demoscene can directly see new demos, without the trouble. Some programs are even uncompiled.
dipswitch: Therefor I wrote "real". One has warez release infos and warez charts only, the other basicly the same with other warez scene reports. "scenedicate" however has no motivation to report about warez releases and it's articles are about demoscene, console demoscene, interviews, subculture and beyond. It's fine with me even if it were the third or 113th console diskmag, but Consol Shock and Console World are definitly not what I personally would expect from a "real" console diskmag.

to be honest, 1993 warez scene is much more "real" scene to me. but tastes differ. anyway, i like scenedicate quite much, but no need to call yourself "first real scene diskmag" blahblah, seriously.
oh, you actually even wrote "first console diskmag", which is even less true, even if you do not consider warez reports "scenish" for some weird reason.
anyway, no hard feelings, i just dont like old efforts to be rhetorically eliminated, even if not out of malicious intent.

dipswitch: I never wanted to discredit Consol Shock and Console World, I'm sorry if this impression was given through my line above. Indeed this was my personal point of view, because I like nowadays Diskmags like PAiN a lot more than older ones that only gathered information about warez releases. I wanted to distance scenedicate from warez diskmags and the warez scene, not posing with big balls. Again, it doesn't really count if it was the first, second, third, 100th or whatever Diskmag. Sorry man. :)
BTW: Good that you brought up this topic! If someone has still contact to the guys who made those two SNES Diskmags, could you forward it to me? Would be great to gather some info about it.

dipswitch: When I was an active sceener ('93 to 2k2) the warez-doodz have been even further down the food-chain than local lamers. They exist roughly on the same level as pron leechers.
Warez Scene has nothing to do with the demo-scene. Sorry, but that's how I experienced it.. Noone gave a fuck about boring scrollers full of warez groups wars or lame written bbs intros.

torus: From your point of view that might be right but the "warez" and the "demo-scene" used to much closer on "classic homecomputers" like 64, Amiga, ST. I used to collect "warez" just for the intros, also got my first intros + demos from ppl I was swapping disks with. Long time ago, that is..
Can we really call a SNES thing a diskmag ? should be a cart-mag or something alike, as it's on a cartridge and not a disk ...
:o)
:o)
torus: pr0n leechers? i think you are mixing up the epochs here. in fact, many bbs's has porn confs to leech from, why not? and the same bbs's were distsites for many demogroups. which made, amongst other things, bbs intros for their distsites. and what scene are you talking about?
at least that is true for up to ~1997.
PeeCee sucked back then (haha, take that, Torus!) :^)
(to be fair: this guy has done some incredible dos demos in the 95-97 era, but still, it took quite some time until "pc" demos become up-to-par with Amiga stuff. I have to admit that todays's GPU shaders truly surpass that ole Miggy HW sh^t :-))
