Demogroups need Ascii nfo's!

category: offtopic [glöplog]
Yes. As an Ascii artist myself I always have a look at the readme.txt or .nfo of a Demo. And I often see that Demogroups either have NO ascii art at all or only lame one. :P

Demoscene definetaly needs Ascii Art again!

P.S.: requests to elend@gmx.de ;)

well, then good news. i am working on an ascii collection which will include infofile logos and file_id.diz's for active demogroups on all platforms. it will be ready in 1-2 months i guess.

ascii has to be...

when the readme.txt contains only name of product and group you can also ship this produktion without it.

make readme's worth reading. put some code, gfx, zik infos in it and the people out there will get nice infos about you and your crew and if someone put a bad message at pouet it can be because there were missunderstoods between the product and the consumer e.g. gfx resolution, needed hardware, sound rendering or not and so on...

so be intelligent and add a nice readme or file_id.diz to your procudt.

ps does anybody know why the file_id.diz is called so?

I only got this:

The FILE_ID.DIZ file, as defined by its creators (Clark Development), is a file generated by the program author, and NOT the end user who is trying to upload the program

~_??? Clark Development ?!

the .DIZ extensions means "Description in Zip", and was used by Clark Development's "PC Board" for users not having to type in the descripting when they uploaded the files.

It was the only file extracted from zip archives by PCBoard itself when you uploaded something

You want real ASCII or high ASCII? I just hate it when high ASCII is called ASCII art, happens a lot in the demoscene.

yeah, it really upsets me too.

im an ascii artist myself. but i guess the majority doesn't care about ascii nor ansi. anymore. what a pitty.
and, people rarely use a proper viewer for ascii/ansi. acidview/itpdraw should do the job.

we always had and will have ascii nfo's
I'm always happy to see other groups also having that, but sadly most nfo's look like this:

<group>
@party xyz
we rule. you suck.

usually I use the windows commander viewer for nfo's/diz which works perfectly as well (if you're intelligent enough to configure it =))

all my groups have very good asciiart in all nfos, and always had too =)
my groups too =)
I am an Ascii Artist too, and sometimes i wonder why so few Demo Groups use good Ascii Art and like every Warez releated Group has one, since the Demo Groups have much more to do with GFX etc...
Come on, go request something at thuglife.org or look at another nfo you like and visit the group that made it, which you can usually find at #groupname@efnet

hey diamondie, what the crap are you talking. who the heck you think you are to decide what's "real" ascii art and what not... the shit you're talking about has NOTHING to do with scene, seen ? it's about real SCENE ascii art and not about some crappy pictures out of newsgroups.

nothing personal against you, but your opinion about "real ascii art" is just plainly stupid.

Diamond, why isn't high ASCII (I guess you mean >127) ASCII art? Because you can't view it in wordpad?

btw; Notepad works well to view all kinds of ASCII art (low, high, medium, strong) if you have the right font :p

Perhaps DiamonDie doesn't like 'high' ASCII because it crashes on her computer.

But in all seriousness, I've never been a fan of ASCII art. Too many times you have step far away from the computer or blur your eyes to decipher the image. I'd rather just see an easy-to-read well-formated info file, but with a decent amount of content. (In most cases I actually read any accompanying documentation before watching a production. )
I love this thread!

1. It's about a perfectly meaningless issue
2. Diamondie ventured a silly opinion
3. Dipswitch bitches about ASCiII and how it's cool.

All it needs is plek screaming where the effects are and IZM being a true-to-life razor idiot by ranting about plek saying anything. Oh, and stefan trolling at least twice. -Then we can close the discussion, pretend we're not amused by homosexual photos and we have ourselves a winning thread! \0/

i think all ASCII art should be banned that don't display correctly in notepad with Times New Roman :))

Aside of that i love big'n'fancy ascii logos.
"type file_id.diz|more" should do the job :)

thom: isn't that the fun about ascii art, that it needs a certain look to be read ? it's the same with graffitti, usually you're not able to read it on the first glance.
and I don't see as well, why ascii>127 shouldn't be "real" ascii.

ASCII is Graffity. Of course you have to look twice to see something, or to actually read what the Ascii Logo says, but who cares? I think we only need some nice Ascii Grouplogos in nfo's. Only the Logos, not the whole nfo! :P The most important things, like Settings, Specs etc. can be read by everyone. So no one will cry "uh it crashed, because I couldn't read what Systemspecifications it needs" ~_° ?

And every scener should know how to display Ascii Correctly!!!

And as long as someone Paints a Picture with normal ASCII Chars, we can call it Ascii Art. The only difference: Some look ugly, some Not. :P But that's everywhere the case... Music... Demos... ART.

a) sure its nice to have a look at nice ascii´s in group nfofiles, also its nice if demo has proper (correctly sized, cause there are enough BBS still around) file_id.diz

b) diamondie´s comment is really stupid as here its scene and ascii art have been called so since day one.. surreal ascii i´d say then?!

c) shifter´s post was nice for a morning laught :)

d) yea, u cant read it easy sometimes but its actually cool! also make sure to have topaz or some other amiga font loaded when you view non-blocky ascii, it makes it look much better / more readable
