mm... just came across rarefluid's dosbox video of inside (ftp://ftp.untergrund.net/users/rarefluid/74_Carillon_Cyberiad_-_Inside.avi)... is it just me, or is the music playback screwed? seems to me like some samples are terminated way too early. for the sake of comparison, ftp://ftp.modland.com/pub/modules/Protracker/Yolk/coop-Legend/eyegabo0om%20final.mod.

know what you mean....

It seems to be the GUS. When I select SB16 as sounddevice, the long samples aren't clipped...

The sound with SB16 is much better. Seems to be the CNCD GUS-player... I'll capture and upload it tomorrow.
Thanks for pointing out.

create a php page with a code looking like that. be sure to have time out turned to max on your php server (code not tested)
<?
$uNbProd=26583;
for ($uI=0;$uI<$uNbProd;$uI++)
{
$content = file('http://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which='.$uI);
if (!(strpos($content,">video<") === false))
{
echo 'http://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which='.$uI.'<br />';
}
}
?>

Yeahhhhhhh send beers to rarefluid !!!!
Thanxx for the videos guy, great job.
Btw and imho 2 demos are running too fast (Chapi Chapo and Evolver)
Thanx again.

Can't see anything wrong with the Chapi Chapo capture. Evolver was really hard to capture. The scene with the torus does seem to be running too fast, I know...

Hello, there's no major problems with these 2 captures but correct me if i'm wrong, i think that you use Dosbox for capturing dos demos.
Imho Chapi Chapo seems to run too fast (i mean the rendering), the caracters are spinning too fast, for Evolver i think the rubber thing is too rapid.
What i want to say is i'm not sure that on a "real" 486 Pc these demos runs as fast as your vids.
Anyway you done great work, thanks for that ;-)

Some demos/routines are synched to the timer, others not. The Problem is that you need to try what "cycle"-count looks original while still getting a decent framerate. If you have a demo that runs at full speed on a P100, ok, you can adjust DOSBox to that. But if it's a single routine, your fucked. And cut/pasting vids together isn't much fun.
Bomb!- Rox was IMHO completely unsynched, I needed to enter a specific cycle count to make it look (almost) right...
Other examples are those raytracing demos (rubicon etc.). They took 2-3 hours to capture because you really need a lot of cycles to get a decent framerate.
The Evolver video isn't exactly a masterpiece. It used really weird interlacing-techniques (that might look right on a CRT), some synched/unsynched routines, mode switches...
I personally prefer a video with a good basic framerate to one where objects jump all over the place. ;-)
...and you forgot that there need to be 27689 faces in Chapi Chapo, so it isn't even fast enough ;-)

AND GUYS: If you have some suggestions for cool DOS demos that need to be captured to video, bring 'em on!

rarefluid: how about capturing some old dos demos by kolor? that'd be ace.

You can already find Fresnel and Wissenschaft at http://wurstcaptures.untergrund.net/
I didn't like Fresnel2 very much, but maybe you have some favorites?

Ok, thanks for the explanations.
Btw, you can take a look at the DosBox demo compatibility list http://pain.scene.org/service_dosbox.php but i think you've already done it ;-)
Some suggestions :
- Crystal Dreams 1 & 2 / Triton
- Toasted / Cubic Team + $een
- The real thing & the unreal thing / Capacala
- Verses / EMF
Thanxx

Into the Dark by Halcyon plzkthx.

(owait. But, who can be bothered to download a DVD split into 10 thousand rar files?)

Also, Fulcrum/Matrix.

You're aware Fulcrum/Matrix was ported to Windows?

IMHO the Halcyon DVD is really worth downloading! The are some nice demos on it. I'll maybe capture it anyway...

And Fulcrum already has a video: http://conspiracy.hu/demovids/matrix_fulcrum.avi

As rc55 brought it up: I read some stuff concernin Xvid and fixed quants vs. 2-pass. I also tried to encode some stuff both ways (Q=4 vs. 1200kbps). What I figured out is:
- file size is the SAME (read: +/- 200kB for a 65MB vid)
- quality with 2-pass is NEVER WORSE
- quality with 2-pass is sometimes MUCH BETTER

Here's a picture from Toasted (which will hit the server in some minutes) which shows a scene where singlepass really losses: http://wurstcaptures.untergrund.net/1passvs2pass.png

So I'll stick to 2-pass encoding in the future....
