4k executable graphics compo

category: general [glöplog]
After Buenzli, tUM 2006 is going to have this compo, which IMHO sounds exciting. I guess it's possible to work in teams (one coder, one graphician). I wonder if anybody has made a good picture with a max. resolution of 320x200 and a max. color# of 256? I'd like to give it a try if I manage to write a program that compresses it to less than 4k.

Any reason for restricting it to 320x200 and 256 colors? I think I could make a decent 4k GIF with those dimensions, so it doesn't seem like a good showcase medium.

Oh I see.. You want a source pic within those constraints, which you'll then produce with code. Never mind.

isnt that excactly what all amiga pixelsers was working with? except for the size ofcourse.

Francis: C64 perhaps. On Amiga there's LZW format for images AFAIK.
The size limit is what makes it interesting.

p01: Nice, but it's not executable. You need an external program to view these images - its size should be added to the image size.

The most popular Amiga graphics format, IFF, does not use LZW compression.

Adok: then you don't know...

As El topo mentioned .IFF is by far the most common graphics format on amiga. LZW is compression - has nothing to do with a "format for images".
Also Francis P. is (almost) right about the resolution, since the standard resolution for amiga is 320x256, and you will find a wide range of old scene images using that size and 256 colors.

Please don't try to sound convincing when you're not...

adok, actually the "new" posibilities ( ie rendering in float precision, shaders ) are make this compo interresting.
who is interested to see a 320x200 image with 256 colors?
you can almost pack the image rater than proceuraly render it.

Adok: Sure, you can also work in a team of two coders and two graphicians. But then there is a high risk of people disagreeing how the picture should look. ;)

El Topo / Puryx: Yes, IFF was what I was thinking about. LZW was just a typo (I was probably thinking of LHA, which is also characteristic of Amiga).

IF you really tried to get a 320x200x256 image into a 4K executable... why mess with any image format or compression anyway? just dumping a bitmap to the screen is way less code - and Crinkler is most probably much, much better at compressing than GIF. :)

challenge of the day: "squeeze 1kb image into a 4kb executable without loosing quality"
the winner marries Adok's sister, miss Magic De Bourne!

Adok: then you "only" need to update your knowledge about C64 ;)

I want to marry Adok's sister! Because that would mean I would have plenty of time socializing with Adok's mom! Maybe even grab a feel once and then.

Tum
...
and?

personally, i think this compo, the way it is done now, is a little dull. imho it'd be a lot cooler if the rules would allow and encourage (but not demand) exactly one appearance effect. totally depending on the image produced, this could simply be showing what's being generated on the fly or something completely neat. it'd add to the wow factor and, additionally, would give me a reason to download these prods at all (given the fact that there's a screenshot of them at pouet).

gargaj: here we say that judging on one bell only is dangerous.

skrebbel: not sure of what you mean. it's de facto allowed to show what's being generated btw.

i think egbert means that the program would show some sort of steps (but not necessarily derivative) to a fixed picture.. and i agree with him that it would be a neat thing to add as compo feature. 4k is enough to add some sort of presentation.. but well..

filipe: so yes, the only change would be to force showing some steps. and 4k is a lot of room indeed. anyway my question was - do you know any other parties with the 4k proc gfx compo? ktnx
