I started a class, c++ programming with directX. I was thinking I would have an edge if I could find a referance. Something free, small and downloadable (for viewing offline, or printing). Does anybody have suggestions?

Download the DX SDK from Microsoft, contains plenty of tutorial material.

It's not small, but it's the ultimate resource.
You can also visit the MSDN page and print articles.
