you suck! (bashing demos...)

category: general [glöplog]
I'm just pointing out that your arguments are so completely generic that there is no way of provoking any form of discussion.

"push more boundaries".

sure. plenty of people do that. if you fail to dig beyond the surface you won't see any demos or intros that *are* different.

I think you're a long way from 'done'. All I have seen is a negative reaction to someone who advocates change through innovation.

I have yet to see your ideas or even a counter arguement that develops the discussion into something more meaningful than 'you're wrong'.

This isn't a flame bait, but I am genuinely interested in where you see the 'scene' going over the next few years.

here go my two cents...

(quotes from evil_sock)

"erm, you've missed my point again. The things shown in those websites are ideas without the technical skill!"

um. no. Atleast rathergood seems to be zero original ideas with zero technical skills and no respect for the artists being ripped off. I'm rather amazed the place hasn't been sued yet. b3ta doesn't seem to be too far behind...

"You guys have the brains, skill and power to take those 'different' ideas and make somethjing new!"

Most of us alse have the brains to realize that, no matter how much we'd want, we could never be good (traditional) storytellers.

"I'm not trying to tell people what to do, say or create but rather that unless you innovate and take new ideas as the central design core then you will only be looking over your shoulder at was has already gone before."

<sarcasm>The demoscene hasn't been very innovative ever. Why start now?</sarcasm>

"Tell me of better demos than the Amiga 'Insanity' demo, 'Jesus on E's' or Front242 ? I just don't see them. All I see is more colour, mp3 instead of XM and lots of fighting ;)"

Then, as sagacity pointed out, you're obviously not following the right groups. Want innovative/different? try kooma (coma), satori or flo.

"Of course it will take six months or so to produce a high quality demo that uses some of the better ideas shown in the website links - the problem as I see isn't that 'payed hands' do Game intro's and the demoscene guys therefore do whatever they like, but rather that the demands of producing something as polished as say the 'Rayman2' intro on the N64 are too much for the traditional setup of demoscene groups - maybe this is why we only see the same old trite by yet another demoscene group."

You must realize that most active sceners also study and/or work. There isn't that much time/interest left for making 'the killer demo that will take 6 months to finish' after spending 8hours a day at the office/at school. And besides, if you can make 'cool shit' thats entertaining and perhaps even technically 'good' in a week, why spend 6 months on a story-demo (if thats what you're after?) when the feedback you'll get will be 'bah, inane and unintelligent... my 5 year old cousin could come up with a better story'...

"Don't you have any links to money via sponsership?"

We aren't skateboarders, you know?

"Innovation, evolution, challenge, success."

Yes. unfortunately it doesn't work most of the time:)

"The 'demos' at rathergood.com should challenge your perception of 'what is good'"

Bwahaaaahaaa!!!
(yes i read the rest of that paragraph and i do partially agree. these people obviously do not hold good execution in any value. but luckily their ideas suck as well:D)

"Give me Fairlight, sprites in the border and the Mighty Bog any day of the week - I'll check back in 2 years time and see if your all still producing the same old Amiga demo's :))"

Granted the pace of the evolution of the (pc) scene isn't the same it used to be in 1995-1997 but we're still moving, and thankfully also diversifying. If you can't see this, you probably haven't gone much beyond pouets top 10.

ps. a quick glance through rathergood.com just gave me the impression that Joel Veitch is the biggest idiot this side of the kingdom of stupid-as-fuck and should prefarably be taken out and shot. several times.

just checked the links, and i got the conclusion, that b3ta & rathergood just gave a new meaning for the preselection at parties.
No matter how good technical skills are beyond these products, the average innocent, and peacefully boozing sceners must be protected at any cost...

heh - well, the links are sort of flame-bait, but they illistrate the point rather better than I expected ;)

Yes of course you're quite right - there are limits to what you can expeft people to do or pull off with the limits that are set by 'life'.

It's not that I don't respect the demoscene, I do, I'm not in a position to even knock something together in DarkBasic so I can't push too hard ;)

Peace
