30 second comps are stupid!

category: general [glöplog]
I'd have thumbed up most of the recent demos if they lasted longer than 30 seconds. They showed lots of potential, but 30 seconds for a demo is a waste of effort!

It must still take a long time and a lot of effort to make, yet there's no real enjoyment to be gained from watching them.

Fuck 30 second compos!!
I can see you escaped the bonfire yesterday... that is a shame..

Then don't watch them.

Uhm, I agree, the minimum should be 1minute.

30s is less than the loading time :D
what about a loop option? :)
After a day at the office I come home to, totally unexpected find new prods by MFX,FLT,ASD,Conspiracy and FR
30 seconds or not this ist just way cool!
It just tastes to alot more , more than just 30 seconds we have to wait untill tum06 or bp07 I suppose.. ;)

No I dont hope intel will get some employees from the makers of these prods.. Demo's forever ;))

The Fairlight prod spent about 20 of its 30 second swapping on my machine, and 30 seconds of the Conspiracy one was quite enough for me ;)
"30 second comps are stupid!" -> no they are not. they are fun.

30 seconds demos(not including loading time) are perfect if you want to buy a 30 seconds advertisement on television to show the average population what the demoscene is all about.

actually hum now that you mention it, probably a good quality mp4 is better compression than this :)

good question imho
which codec to use ?

i saw trace providing .mov lately, but i really hate this format
i remember all the situations where simply installing quick time fucked up my computer

so what ? mp4 ? divx ? xvid ?

i bet it does depend also on bunch of settings/customizations :(
use .fli :D
h264 is good quality but sometimes too cpu intensive.
mpeg-2 is good enough quality but big. but very compatible.

i'd *much* rather see 30 seconds of quality than the 5 minutes of crap that many demos are.
