scene music stolen

category: music [glöplog]
MTV US just picked up the story.http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1550506/20070122/timbaland.jhtml

A short video-news snippet on the left hand side of the screen also (Flash, flashety flash flash flash)

I guess when MTV calls, they have to answer at some point, right?

Also a Virginia local newspaper (Timbaland is from Virginia I believe) also picked it up, and did in fact do a good journalistic job on it (unless most of the other news-outlets).

I would actually call this one semi-in-depth: http://media.www.commonwealthtimes.com/media/storage/paper634/news/2007/01/22/Opinion/Is.Timbaland.A.Con.Artist-2667266.shtml?sourcedomain=www.commonwealthtimes.com&MIIHost=media.collegepublisher.com

MTV... well I guess if that doesn't get some attention, then nothing will.

Some quite insightful piece here:
How public opinion on artistic practices changes

Quote:
What makes it worse is that Timbaland has made money off both the ringtone and the Furtado song. The Recording Industry Association of America is suing students for downloading music freely, claiming the artists work hard and that we pay a justified price for the fruits of their labor. Any one of us could be sued for several thousand dollars for downloading a song, which I am sure most students do. There's a huge case of hypocrisy evident in this case. What right would a thief have to sue for stealing music when he does the same to other artists? Until Timbaland apologizes or gives Suni his due, I strongly advocate that nobody purchase a Timbaland album or anything else he produces - Who knows what else he has taken from others? I am in no mood to finance his possible thievery and his apparent willingness to hurt other less-known artists.

Nice paragraph.

It's nice to see you guys are still making progress.

Several years later, another demoscener, Glenn Rune Gallefoss, remixed the song, with Suni's blessing, to sound as if it were played on a Commodore 64 computer.

cluelessnews updated accordingly :)
omfg to the mtv news headline video on the top left there. is that on national tv in the US too??

if so, gloom, be fucking proud.

At least this will reach Timbalands fanbase better than anything else. Great work :)

(I'm also quite surprised that they picked up the story, since MTV seems to be more a marketing tool than an independent media..)

haven't you realized yet that all publicity benefits pop celebrities (be that negative or positive)?
I'm still naive enough that I believe in people. Maybe I shouldn't.

Well, in case of money-making infrastructure, it is perhaps better to believe in good products than good people.
It's also on a dutch musicsite called '3voor12' :

Fun fact is that they copied my e-mailed text almost 1 on 1 :)

From SA:

Well, I didn't see it mentioned elsewhere in the thread, but MTV just ran a clip about this on MTV News and stated that Timba's press agency had not responded to their calls, but showed footage of the youtube video.

Glenn Rune Galefoss (GRG) maakte een Commodore 64 SID conversie en gebruikte die als sample in Nelly Furtado's hit 'Do It.'

As far as I understand dutch, this means grg made a C64 conversion and used it as a sample in Furtado's Do It. .. as if grg had something to do with Furtado.
