fr-055: 828: OFFICIAL FLAMETHREAD 2007 !

category: general [glöplog]
I prolly should add this post to the actual prod's page, but several comments there make me one sad boy.

When the demo was shown on the bigscreen, I seriously expected people shouting "buuu! cut this arty-farty-crap!" and so on, but I was astonished how well people received 828. It's not easy when doing something this personal, to have your mind and subconsciousness in front of everyone - on a huge bigscreen even. The state of vulnerability was so enormous I almost managed to squeeze the plastic beer pint in my hand into pieces.
I wish to thank all the people who came up to me after the compo and told me their view/opinion regardless of it's content.

What worries me tho, is the misunderstanding of abstract. The beauty of this genre (if you will) is that there isn't one single, correct answer to interprete the content. On well done abstraction there are as many answers as there are people on this planet. And here I feel like I failed, my effort came close tho in which I find comfort.

Also, I did something I enjoyed, and something I am suppose to be doing. Never before have I put so much love into something as I did for 828. I seriously considered of not releasing this prod, because in the end it doesn't make much of an difference.

Well put.

I think it's already established that the problem wasn't the demo as such, it's the fucking lunatics that try to call the other side of the audience dumb for (not) getting what the demo is all about.

Arty-fartiness does not excuse lack of breasts.

Vis: ANY art is going to divide the audience somewhat into like and dislike groups, note that a lot of the most successful art (and by that I mean 'real'/professional artists) lately divides the audience very strongly into love/hate. (And I hate almost all of it myself, give me a decent oil painting where you can see what the artist was actually drawing any day!)

Anyway, as a long time fan of your work, I can say that it's your best demo by far, and one of the best demos ever too, from my point of view. If you hadn't released it, and anyone found out it existed, you would probably be murdered ;) Massive respect for having the balls to actually make it and release it.

visu: if you used latest generation shaders and ripped concepts from commercials you wouldnt need be so nervous for showing demos to audiences. learn something already!

ps: you're so right. it's only art if a) it looks a bit shonky and b) a large proportion of people dont like it. those are the clear defining factors. :)

smash: as like its only fresh when a) its been lowpolied from a commercial b) takes a 3ghz machine with ps3.0 shaders. :p

and even with b) it still runs wonky :(((
if it doesn't have c) hypnoglow it is not art. SImple as that.

Let's imagine a weighing scale.

Let's put a noise demo in one pan.
Let's put a "commercial latest generation whatever" in the other.

Can you guess which one needs actual effort?

Smash: ask people what they think of damian hurst or that tranny pot maker ;) Should have made it a bit more clear what I meant though.. was referring to what makes 'current' art successful.

ps: the way you reply to smash's post with cheap stabs that are both irrelevant and low-level implies it's you who needs to get over the fact that there are people who don't think the demo is the best ever.

smash's post was a reply to rainmaker, whose post in turn was a bit off ("All you dissing 828 can go and shove your animated characters/robots/whatever you like to do or see in demos"). personally i like to see a good demo no matter the style, "good" of course being subject to opinion.

i respect visualice for doing his thing, that's something everyone's entitled to, but the demo didn't really awake any emotions in me, nor was it groundbreakingly appealing to my eyes or ears either. people (including ps) will just have to accept that. i'm sure visu already has.

it'd be nice if we could actually discuss+criticise it as a piece of art, rather than being told that it's art so therefore is above criticism - or having a black&white discussion about some things being art and some things not, or getting it/not getting it, or loving some things and hating others. (and without all the "noise" from those who only want to watch the popular demo or 1995, and think it should have been done in 64k on an amiga.)
personally i, like reed, respect visu for "doing his thing", but i do think that _as a piece of art_ it has flaws. so there. :)

reed: people who diss others work for the sake of their ego deserve cheap stabs. i have no problem that people find 828 less techie or boring or whatever they argue. if dont like watching it, dont bother watching, state you dont like it. you're free to do so. but i dont see the relevance in same people writting such comments stating that the makers are a bunch of pretentious idiots claiming to do art. unless ofcourse it's to inflate their own egos, trying to "warn" people who actually enjoyed it that they are worshipping people inferior to them. and that behaviour does deserve all the cheap stabs i ever conjured in my head even if i have been avoiding throwing any for the sake of argument that it might be me missinterpreting the comments and people simply enjoy repeatedly stating that everyone who enjoyed it is a missguided idiot since there is no music, no feeling, no art, no tech in the demo whatsoever. excuse me if i might feel slightly insulted by the abuse now and again.

I think the discussion was more about fans of the demo calling the people that 'didn't get it' a bunch of dumb retards that like pretty pictures.

Eitherway, this whole 'discussion' is sensless in the same way that discussing music is sensless.

ps: if thats why you said it, you got the wrong target and you should go and read it all back a bit more carefully. and take that chip off your shoulder while you're at it. :)

Meh, it was indeed also the other way around, nevermind.. this will just never end.
