Free world?

Manhunt 2 was aparently banned in UK. Is that the only way they can see to avoid ppl balming games for stupid death excuses? Why don't they do the same to movies, books, painting, newspapers, television news...? Why do they censor stuff? If kids can't buy alcool the same should happen with games instead of changing the art piece.

Of course the ban will be lifted.. It's all hype, in each video I've seen for this game they make a big thing about it not being rated.

i dont get it.

manhunt 1 features a guy on death row being jumped by a film director who forces him to kill people for snuff film purposes.
manhunt 2 features an alleged scientist who has to escape from an asylum.

now, without judging the graphicality (which is around the same, admittedly), which plot makes you more eager to ban a game?

It's not about the game, it's about censorship and banning.

serves them right actually. While I'm against cencorship I think that it has gone a bit too far with games like postal and now this.

I wonder how do the people who work on these games feel when they go home in the evening. - how was your day love ? - oh great I modelled some chopped off fingers...

So, that's what you have to do to sell a game nowadays? Remember me to ever play any rockstar game again...

If they keep going, what would be next? Pussy massacre? Here you have a pussy in the screen, and you have a knife, scissors, gun, grenade, food processor... play!

Did none of you play Tenchu on the PS1, PS2, or PSP? It was all ninja stealth leading up to bloody flourishy kill moves. Beheadings, throat slicings, stabs through the gut etc. Blood everywhere, splashing in huge gouts. This is nothing new except for the shakey cameras and higher res texture mapping.

to be honest those 'sick' developers try 'only' to rivalize with mad movies and grab their potential audience. They aren't that many (Running With Scissors, Rockstar are the most famous ones) but get full media coverage because of the controversies and that's clearly what they want at first place.

now i think that there are way more mainstream games that are spoiled by missing blood, or worse, green blood :S

99,99% of gamers do totally make the difference between fantasy violence and reality : it's like those unreal horror shockers movies, except that you usually play the actors of the violence, but isn't that the ultimate jubilation ? GTA fun was spoiled by too many sequels but originally it's was *really* fun!

so should we stop making and playing fun games and sometimes some real pieces of fun & art (ones of my best game experiences are Soldier of Fortune 1 - story so stupid but such an exhilarating fps, and Stalker - a magnificent hardcore survival rpg/fps), only because there are a very few really sick people around whose mad acts may be triggered by those ?

and to be really honest i even think the contrary, that thoses games fully play their roles of catharsis, nothing better than a fps session to throw away your aggressiveness accumulated the whole day, instead of beating up your wife, child, pet, tv, boss... (j/k)

Zest : fuck that catharsis man. Super-violent computer games are a symptom of a civilisation that has become so safe and inhibited that people have to seek out fantasy violence to stay sane... In my opinion that's radically fucked up. Kids and adults alike are being kept in every way possible from getting hurt, or doing anything spontaneous or risky. Children are brought up by parents and teachers who, for the most part, are shit scared of letting their children know anything about sex - because it's all supposedly taboo for that age group.
YES - people have aggressive and sexual biological instincts and urges. Look at animals - they shag, and they playfight. When it comes down to it they fight all out too.
BUT - "Aggression" and "Violence" are different things. You can be aggressive in a skate park, you can be aggressive whilst playing a piece of harpsichord music etc. etc. etc. Where does violence figure in that?
YES - our instincts are frustrated and repressed by society. I'm still with Freud on this one.
BUT - using ever more realistic fantasy violence is like getting drunk on whiskey every time you have a real world problem - it doesn't solve your problems, just shunts you into another realm and marks another wasted day.

tbh, most people found this vid quite funny, but it made me almost want to cry. I can see what's funny about it, yes, but it also really scares me.

And finally - do you seriously reckon that this cathartic-defense is anything other than a contrived pseudo-scientific excuse constructed post facto to attempt to explain the appeal? What do people really think? -
#1 "I crave cathartic release of the day's frustrations. Else I may end up mistreating my wife and children!" ?
as opposed to
#2 "I want to kill people. I wonder if the developers included the ability to shove dynamite down peoples' throats!" ?

In my opinion, if gamers want to be as mature and objective about things as they pretend to be, they should present a more credible front. Something like:
"We grew up with un-realistic violent games, which had comedic elements, or were at least fun to play. We grew through the age of cartoon blood and pixellated limbs flying off, and now we are in the age of more photorealistic violence. The issue is that we have one background, and you lot have a different background. Your point of view is different to ours because you have not been desensitised. What we find fun, you may find sickening, but there is a historic reason."

Man, I'd totally accept that but no... everybody is up on their high horse because they read about Freud on a forum somewhere. 'Yeah - developers of violent games are saving society man!' I can't fathom the fumbling logic that comes to that sort of conclusion.
