do you find it slow compared to amd ?
I haven't had the pleassure yet... in two weeks I will though. But... why? Do you?

well comes from comments on humus' website and i'm about to renew hardware

that's why i ask here, prolly coders working in the industry gonna have a clue
What do you mean? I'm clueless about recent hardware news.

I just realised that amd is the new ATI so maybe that's where the confusion comes from :D

256: Remember that Humus works for ATI (at least he used to).

indeed
he still works for amd i guess, so again, that's why i need other coders' point of view
256: The GeForce 8800 cards are about the coolest cards money can buy these days. DX10-support has proven to be a huge problem for ATI.

that's why there is a controversy :)
ati/amd is late at dx10 and now new radeons are supposed to perform better ?

that's what i want to sort out, at least for the geometry shader stuff

FACT: Most demos still work on a passively cooled Radeon 9600

Guardian: Humus works at ATI afair (I remember reading a paper at work about compression for HDR and it was signed by him as an ATI worker).

Nvidia has the lead at the moment, I would not by an ATI card for DX10 stuff.

keops: i know he works for amd/ati as already stated by kusma :) and that is precisely the point of my question: the guy working for amd/ati says nvidia 8800's geometry shader performance is VERY SLOW compared to what's achieved by amd/ati. knowing that, did someone else (probably working for the video game industry since i'm pretty sure games are tested on reference hardware from both vendors) make comparison tests ?
Guardian: http://www.hardware.fr/articles/671-6/ati-radeon-hd-2900-xt.html

We haven't done any comparison yet, we work with 8800 cards and use only one ATI card so far to test compatibility issues.

However, a guy in our team is messing with our engine and DX10 (an ex-Dice guy by the way), I can try and torture him to make him give away that kind of information if you want ;)

yes please
none of them perform that well for geometry shaders yet. :) hopefully the _next_ round of dx10 cards, which should also coincide with a wider adoption of vista/dx10, will sort it out. :)

I have an Acer Aspire 5920 with GeForce 8600M GT here ... and it's slow but relatively quiet ;)

Another question, why are there still no demoparties, that would allow Direct3D 10? All of the party machines are using Windows XP.

emzic: that's exactly the notebook I'm planning to get
or the G2S (same but have TV and screen is 17")

no wonder if acer is slow if you ask me :P

its the 1705 model

EviL: Well, it's a standard Santa Rosa design with a standard 8600M GT chip clocked at a standard 475 MHz. I don't think Acer could have broken anything here. The main reason for me thinking it's slow is certainly that my expectations are too high, like "runs debris smoothly at native resolution with 4xAA", which it doesn't :)
