opensource bloatware

category: general [glöplog]
I'm so pissed right now, I was working on an image of angelina jolie all robotisized and shit, and it was looking seriously nice! Prolly put about 2hrs into it, and was adding the finishing touches. I go to click on the main window and what happens? Blam, crash! I check the memory usage, and Gimp is using 128mb of ram for 1 image with 4 layers @ 1024x768. WTF!!! bullshit.

Another crapola is Firefox, I can have it open for about a day with just one or two tabs open, no js, no java, no flash or anything like that, and eventually that sucker will climb up to 200 megs and up!!!

I was pissed about the whole firefox thing about 6 months back because my old laptop only had 128mb ram, and firefox would just fuck the shit out of it. I'd be stuck using vmem all the time. So I looked into things, and found out that Firefox stemmed off of a project called Phoenix. I downloaded an old copy of phoenix to check it out, and to my suprise, no memory leak.

What is it with today's software that it has to use 100's of megs of ram just to be at idle? I mean, old versions of phoenix work fine, just as well as FF in most cases, I just dont understand what happened.

128Mb? :)

Try Visual Studio with a solution having 30+ projects and start reorganizing files in various projects. Memory usage will climb at lightspeed and VS will eventually crash. That's what it did at work when we reorganized rendering stuff in our engine, memory usage eventually reached 1.2Gb (for VS only) before crashing. Worked every time :)

and of course working for 2 hours without saving your work is a sign of lack of experience :)

128megs? peanuts. Just get more memory.

Memory is cheap these days and a few gig is pretty standard, so worrying about 128mb is pretty pointless. Then again, it really winds me up when something that used to work fine on a machine with 32mb now needs 1gb and seems to run slower. Yes, I'm looking at you, microsoft office.

Why don't you use a better browser ?

Besides, you have "gimped" the [wanabe] porn from your desktop :)

Most of my porn is on a network drive.

1.3 GB sounds like a memory leak. Ie. bug, not bloat. Not that it's not bloated. Most software is. Firefox is far from the worst application ever, though. And 1024 x 768 x 32bit ARGB x 4 layers ~= 12 MB just for your picture. Then add undo buffers, temporary bitmaps, all the code and tables and whatnot, the user interface, etc., and 128 MB isn't bad at all really.

The actual problem was with one of the plugins i was using, firebug was enabled, and was caching some things i think, also irresponsible use of open all images in another window contributed.

p01 > i know what you're thinking about, but you have to face it, you're biased :)

this is my way of using my browser: at the moment, i have 16 firefox opened, 3 to 10 tabs each : it takes 177mo of main memory, 260mo of virtual memory

and at the same time, i have 1 opera opened, with 12 tabs, and it takes 152mo of main memory, 171mo of virtual memory

indeed, it all depends on what's opened etc

i decided to give opera a try because of this bug opened in 2003 and still unresolved: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=213391 which i find shameful and priceless :)

however, my opera user experience is not that much better: opera also eats A LOT of memory; that's my conclusion

i also gave IE7 a try, and strangely enough, when opening too much instances or too much tabs, somehow my system ran out of handles: like i had to close a ie7 instance or close a tab to be able to open an explorer window, or any other application that needs to obtain a window handle. i googled a bit for this problem but i did not find it mentioned anywhere

Everything seems to be easier with mo of memory. Unfortunately my computer only has mb :o(

lynx wouldnt eat that much ram
256: I know I'm biased. But I also like to tease people.

FireFox is/was known to leak up to 1.5 - 2 Gb. I've never seen Opera eating more than 300 mb at work ( beside when I did some memory comsuption test cases ), and I keep my sessions open for weeks ( until f#@king MS updates decides to restart my computer without asking me ).

I tried IE7 ... and well ... this browser is a joke.
I tried Safari 3 beta on windows. Fast and standard compliant but the UI and usability are a really bad.

FWIW, I was a FireFox/FireBird/Phoenix fan boy and I still use it. Not as my primary browser.

But one thing I'm not oblivious of is that I probably wouldn't have use Opera if I didn't work for them and had people showing me how to customize it to my liking.

At the end of the day, all softwares suck. It's up to you to decide where you don't mind a good sucking.

The reason i stopped using fireefox is primerally politics, the project makes millions of dollars yet its "open source" so developers get next to nothing.

Opera makes money too, but they dont act all self riteous and the software is tidier, interface is nicer. Been using it since 2000.
