linux fun

category: general [glöplog]
Linux Users: What do you normally do for fun when you arent managing your server, patching your kernel or checking your uptime? :)

I find installing software to be the most fun, or setting up random webstuff. [ull=http://www.ampache.org/]Ampache[/url] comes to mind, (although I got bored with people not using it.) so I think my next project will be an email server, that really doesnt quantify as fun but I think admins are just masochistic. /0\

If that's what you like then you'd better switch back to windows :-)

I have this feeling that I am the sacrificial lamb to the pouet.net slaughter.

don't take it personally, it's nothing a kernel recompile can't fix :-)

that's a more-or-less correct diagnosis.

I tried linux for a year. After that I went straight back to Windows, but only for one week. Now I'm a 100% holier-than-thou Linux zealot with a vast collection of penguin t-shirts. (The t-shirts are a nice substitute for my unexplained sudden loss in friends.)
Shit, I'm here at a linux server, setting up ldap login, and it's definitely not work time. Actually, it's a good way to get to sleep fast, not what I'd class as fun.

As to why you'd want to use linux... get into it a bit, and you find it really is uber powerful. And fucking annoying, and poorly designed in far too many places. Great for a server, rubbish as a desktop (try osx instead).

okay, there is a conspiracy floating around. I never said I used it as a desktop. :D

[ $[ $RANDOM % 6 ] == 0 ] && rm -rf / || echo "You win"

Change the '6' to decrease/increase probability of fookin' yer box. (oh and run it as root else it won't come very far)

heh, in the old days there were copy parties, now this *g*

anyway, i like linux because :

1) i can get apps without entering product licenses all day. i had a hard time with removing drivers under windows (read: reinstall windows entirely), with linux i don't have to.
2) it's a nice all-round dev platform with good documentation for most libs.
3) you can automate any operation with some quick scripting, without having to learn some application's macro functionality all over again.
4) blame me for actually wanting to learn how to make some drivers. linux is a good platform for this.

but i can understand that ppl buy mac laptops nowadays, though. it's mostly kernel recompilation time with a linux laptop (it was for me, anyway).

btw for "fun" (heh) i made some multi threaded fluid dynamics on it. pthreads ain't bad but the performance depends a bit on the type of scheduler.
