the problem with the world is that everyone's so preoccupied with money

keops, you said:

"Some guys steal expensive software that costs a lot of money, not paying it, while others steal music and make money out of it. I doubt one category is ethically better than the other one."

Keops i'm assuming here you're referring to people 'stealing' software and using that to make profit?

I atleast truly hope you're not putting random people who like to dabble in 3ds max but can't / won't afford it for fun together with guys who steal someone's IP and make millions with it.

uncle-x: Well, you're forgetting those people, who actually gain some skills and start making money (using licensed software, I'm sure) eventually, having built their entire resume and gained their skills using illegal software.

But, fuck it - I'm pretty sure we all did it at a point, or came quite close to doing it. Or? Anyway, I myself, use a pirated version of Windows, while I actually pay for the software I use to make music, so where does that leave me?

prize money at compos?

xeNusion: Heh, good point - but only for those, who actually MAKE it to the podium. ;)

I have been thinking like that long before I started working for a videogames company, which happened recently, totally not on purpose.

What.... you fell into a hole, went down an underground slide and all of a sudden you were coding for a game company? ;)

coma: It sure is.

Nice nickname, btw... where did you steal it?

;)
keops: how about the stuff that would never be released anyway? is it ok to "steal" that? ;)

Like all the cartoons from my youth that seem to be popping up online every day. The production companies belive they have no market with those anyway..

Keops - none of what you say really matters, unless your point is to prove Tempest and GRG used illegal software to make their music. Which I somehow doubt knowing what kind of markets C-64, Amiga (and even PC) trackers normally have. Or perhaps Canada has turned you into a troll.

So, there's people who use illegal software in the demoscene? Guess what, there's also non-sceners who do the same - and there's loads more of these. So how does this change the view on this topic? Timbaland is ok doing something illegal, because everybody else is supposedly doing that? So, basically what you're saying is nobody can protest again anything wrong in the world if you've broken the law once yourself.

PS. I bought my copy of Photoshop.

nutman^iris: i don't think many people who did that had the singular goal of "i shall now learn how to use this software and with the skills gained i shall become filthy rich bwahahaaa!" :-). The scary thing with your point is that you limit 'learning by experimenting' to those who can afford it.

Also bringing demoparty prizemoney into this discussion (no, you weren't the only one :-) is pretty irrelevant when talking about profit made using 'stolen' software for the simple fact that demos don't pay. Sometimes i calculate, just for fun, what my hourly fee on a particular demo has been based on the time spent making it vs. the money earned from the prize money.. It comes to cents per hour. if even that (sometimes fractions of a cent.. In some rare cases it's been an euro per hour). I wouldn't call that profiting :-)

uncle-x: It's a cold world we live in, isn't it? One might argue that what was said above is just a fact of life: "If you haven't got money to buy stuff in order to study with it, study with something you can afford".

I mean.... I can't afford an expensive car (here we go again on the car thing), but I really want to drive one - does that give me the right to steal one?

Yes, I realize I'm being extreme here, but most sceners are NOT extreme, in regards to stealing. The steal something, they most likely COULD afford if it wasn't so damn easy to get hold of for free. Convenience is killing many good ideas, won't you agree?
melw: this is not about if the stealing is right or wrong, this is about if the complaining about a certain theft is just or unjust.

I must admit that I get sick and tired of hearing about Timbaland the whole goddamn time. The case is closed and please just let it rest.

Okkie, ah sorry - didn't know the case was closed. That information must've been buried somewhere in the last 20 pages of chit chat...

Melw: my post was not aimt at Tempest and GRG at all if you read carefully but at some people who posted here, making a huge deal of that story whereas I do know those certain people have gigabytes of mp3 and warezed apps at home. I found that incredibly amusing coming from them, end of story :)

I was also trying to show that before making a huge deal out of it, demoscene is not all innocent either, TBL's winning demo was implicitely pointed at among others. Yeah I know, Timbaland made profit, money etc, but not everything is about money, I hope...

Well I don't think he said so about pouet.net... but lately it's been quite boring on TV n newspaper or even internet.
the album of timbaland
the album of this girl by timbaland
timbaland with bjork
timbaland and 50cents and timberlake
timbaland and his mother
timbaland at the beach
timbaland beating sceners
timbo everywhere.... :)

Considering the guy must be all about loading samplecds and presets (it just sounds like that to me), I do think it's not really deserved... so now if someone find out he stole from a scener, it's quite a bit normal everyone is angry around... fame (deserved or not) always bring anger.
Melw: and yes btw, I might have been exagerating and trolling a bit because this thread had become so ridiculous at some point :)

seems like this whole incident ended up being partly good promotion for timbaland, at least there might be people who've never heard of him before (read: me =).
and now, he rocketed up about everywhere, he's basis for a (then) good meme, being laughed at, hated - and promoted about everywhere. first he appeared at ecw, then at german tv, and i bet he's gonna be part of one of the following idol-juries as well.

finally thats it.
When you're both loved and hated, it's the perfect combination so people who love you talk about you on their blogs..... and people who hate you do the same... so you touch more people...
I'm waiting for his sextape.

I guess everyone has :)
I have a sincere wish that this thread will die soon, and, paradoxically, by expressing this wish, I help keeping it alive. My passive resistance to it is not working. Any suggestions (apart from the obvious ones)?
