Good samples are about 50% of the work you have to put in a tune, meaning that just leeching some wavs from your favourite p2p client isn't enough to make a personal, good sounding and hopefully brilliant tune... trading AKAI cds with your favourite scene friends it's known to have helped, but consider passing some hours on postprocessing to achieve the sound you want.

blue_ice: If you're after drum samples, I'd suggest getting a freeware program called 'stomper' -- it's a drum sample synthesizer that runs in windows. Great for making all sorts of unique and [high quality] sounds that are distinctly yours.

Stomper can be found here.

If you're after other sounds though, like pads, etc. I'd go with hunting down some soundfonts - a good starting point is hammersound.net or if you're working with a tracker you can find a bunch of sounds specifically for .mods here

Drum synths usually sound... synthetic (read: cheap). And for the rest: Google should give you tons of sample sites, have you even tried?

i tryed stomper two years ago....
sound is ....kinda hard and metalic (snares),
AKAI cd are real thing but i cant find them ...

i agree that good samples are only 50% of good track, but in this 2003 i'm kinda tired of bad samples and 8 bit instruments...

never underrate the possibility of actually sampling existing records... okay, now some "professionals" might say "oh how lame and unprofessional", but in fact, that's how many electronic genres started and developed a big own-dynamicity. jungle was, easily spoken, based on one single sampled funk drumloop (the notorious "amen" break)...

I ran into this once, might be useful http://www.kiarchive.ru/pub/misc/sounds/samples/ft2/

I also bought a copy of Mazzive Injection: No 1. Instruments many years ago http://www.maz-sound.com/instruments.html. Good collection of dry stuff, but like Dixan mentioned, post-processing is a must

Best I have found. It is really great.
I want it all and I want it now.. eh..? :-)
Well, sample CDs are worth the money. I didn't find good samples on the net either.
The spirit of the net is everything for free.. but you know that can't be true.. well, I'd suggest you to invest 100$ or so into a sample cd so you don't have to browse for hours to get nothing.
Good sample cds can be found at http://www.bestservice.de. Thats where I have mine from..

Ah yeah.. of course, synths are worth the money too.. :-)

Wizard's tips: look for Gravis Ultrasound banks. PPLT and some others are nore value than *GOLD*, and free as well. You also need time and software to post-process them before you can actually use them. Besides, tell us what kind of samples do you want? I may have some of any kind, but i primarilly hunt for natural sounds -- which is the hardest i believe.

good and free sounds can be found on the field .. all you need is a more or less good working md-recorder.
