trolls of the world begone

category: general [glöplog]
An ancient prophet once said "pouet != demoscene && demoscene != pouet".

I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this; it seems like we need an "unban me beautiful" thread here on the BBS. Anyway, it seems like one of my group members, thom, has been banned. I'm sure you have your reasons, but I know from first-hand experience that thom is a worthy demoscener, not a troll (at least not intentionally). I've produced three or four demos with him, and I know he also produced one on his own. I respect what he has to say, and don't think he should be banned.

But ps is the one who does the banning. To ban ps would create a paradox, the result of which could cause a chain reaction that would unravel the very fabric of the space-time continuum and destroy the entire universe!

s_tec : from what I can see, Thom did not get banned but http://www.pouet.net/user.php?who=28004 did.

Are you claiming that they are the same person ? :)

'people who actually make demos', complain that the people here just talk and talk and don't do demos (according to Archmage's post it's a musthave credential), yet still they want this place to turn into a suitable environment to 'talk about making demos'.. hmmm.. curious where that would lead :D

Also, i somewhat agree with smash, aint Bitfellas an attempt to host 'serious conversations'? Many of the people complaining here are ON bitfellas yet see i fail to see the oh-so-interesting conversations from them (besides the happy birthday wishes or random *url*-lookatthis-threads) that couldve been held on pouet instead..

texel: yes, lets compare ratios of my fun to useful threads, you really got a solid argument there. ah, no, i forgot, the only people who can have a brainsense and desire to clean things up must be jesus and virgin mary themselfs, how silly of me.

s_tec: perhaps he shouldnt have trolled annonymously right after the anti-troll campaign starts. perhaps he could offer his arguments to the discussion in a non troll-like behaviour using his old account now?

I am confused. I thought for sure thom's main account, #1224, had been banned, but I see now that it is not. I must be losing my mind.

maybe it was initially and its one that i mistakingly forgot to readd.. its a possibility, thom please come here and confirm to us if you should be banned or not.

Oh, and I fully support the idea of a banning-option that is based upon the majority of the users, not the webmasters.

Too easily manipulated.

But, why are the scene.org forums dead while the Pouet forums are not, if the scene.org forums are better than the Pouet forums and everyone is free to choose?

Because the scene.org homepage doesn't bring in a regular stream of eyeballs day in day out from the other stuff on the site.

Thom would come and explain himself, except that he apparently lost the password to account #1224 (thom), and can't retrieve the password because his email address has changed and his IP address is now banned. Go figure. Anyhow, this would explain his second account, #28004 (fart_flower). I feel much less confused now. :)
added on the 2007-11-13 22:41:59 by s_tec s_tec
i'll send him a new password then. he should have mailed staff@scene.org about it :)

s_tec: or it explains that he messed around with a fake account which eventually led him to have his IP banned through this fake account. How awkward :)

That's silly. The scene.org forums are available, they work, and they're "better and cleaner". All the regulars on Pouet who hate it so much could have gone there already to have their civilised discussions, but either they prefer not to because they actually like the noise, or they really don't care about the noise - that is, until someone starts shouting "this is outrageous", and all the drama starts. But even then they ignore the other options such as scene.org and Bitfellas and then choose to hit down on the things they hate about Pouet. It doesn't add up.

It's true, though, that if all the more civilised (albeit, at the end of the day, oddly immature) participants left, the BBS would be little more than 4chan sans most of the make-believe kiddiepr0n and Asian-fetishism, and you could argue that the BBS should be closed altogether, or just hidden away so it's not the first thing you see when you visit a website that's supposed to be scene-related.

But the fact remains that as it looks now the Pouet BBS does reflect the scene very well, there are lots of sceners here who like it (even though many complain endlessly (yet come back again and again, mind you)), and there is a high degree of civility among the users who care about that, even though it may conflict with some other users' personal sense of aesthetics to have it all mixed with random images and the ramblings of attentionwhoring cunts.

rant off

So there.

One of the problems with a stupid topic on the bbs is that make serious demoscene topics move down in the main pouet page and that way get less attention or even get ignored.

This topic ("trolls of the world begone") looks like if it is going to be on the main page for long time... so it has a very similar effect of a stupid topic.
added on the 2007-11-13 23:37:35 by texel texel
Even the random image thread falls off the main page from time to time you know. ;)

That's true.

Well... I propose to create a Vote For Your Popular Thread and a Top of the Trolls categories.

Let's see what happen.

Worth reading about the whole topic:

Didn't read all of that, cause it's fairly bland and boring, but it doesn't seem to take gender distribution into account, and it ignores age, interests, intelligence, and actually just about everything else in order to make broad generalisations about groups of all types and sizes, based on a few studies of mental patients. And his approach is amateurish.

And it's full of observations that could be made anywhere, but are none the less still contested, such as "all anarchies fail". Some of it makes a lot of sense, like, seperating the technological and social aspects of online community management is a bad idea, but, well, duh. The best music ever, the best graphics ever, and the best code ever don't make the best demo ever, unless it all meshes together in beautiful harmony (see, you hadn't thought of that, had you!!!).

You are at a party, and you get bored. You say "This isn't doing it for me anymore. I'd rather be someplace else. I'd rather be home asleep. The people I wanted to talk to aren't here." Whatever. The party fails to meet some threshold of interest. And then a really remarkable thing happens: You don't leave. You make a decision "I don't like this." If you were in a bookstore and you said "I'm done," you'd walk out. If you were in a coffee shop and said "This is boring," you'd walk out.

Whoever did that text is a submissive asshole. I'm with Command Cyborg.

What he says fucking pisses me off, he keeps spamming the oneliner with bullshit noone cares about, and he keeps spamming any thread he can with bullshit noone cares about. LCF doesn't harass anyone and is not violent - i don't think he needs to be banned.
