anthology.avi end part, is that pure animation or is it pure fucking windows .exe?

No matter what, i just love that endpart of the xvid.

what is that disk anyway? Is it a video? Or a video and a load of atari executables?
added on the 2007-12-05 16:32:12 by psonice psonice
it's a collection tributing to the 15 years-history of the atari st demogroup Dune. It's done mainly by mic/dune - one of the best graphicians in the atariscene, so what you get are great and sweet graphics along with music by Dma-Sc in a lot of little win-exe- programms done just for fun.
Of course all Atari-Dune-releases, pics and also interviews are on there, too. Also that certain video, featuring avi-versions of many dune-releases as long as some great animation stuff is on there.
I really like it :)

Nice stuff by Dune, but I never realised the ST sound is so freakin awful! Never heard 1 decent piece of music on the ST sadly.

Xernobyl: Oh god, I rest my case! Really awful! Loads of tunes there and I'm not knocking the melodies, but they all have the same shrill and tinny sound! :P

Buttler - you using STEEM or hardware? The sound in STEEM is pretty cack in my opinion. Real HW sounds better.
Keops : I would simply love to see dune back in the business

Nytrik: Dune are still in business!

The musicians are talented and have put together good melodies but it's the ST sound chip I dislike. Everything has that same chip tune/glitchy sound. There's also this uncomfortable lack of bass that makes the music feel kind of empty.

At least Amiga and C64 chip tunes have some variation in sound, pitch, distortion etc to make them sound less "chippy".

It's a shame because the Atari ST has some real cool demos and their scene aged with a lot more dignity than the Amiga. It's just the sound that bothers me. :P

ButtlerTheAlarm : Yeah the YM2149 is quite crappy, totally comparable to the soundchip included in the Amstrad CPC or Spectrum ZX. On the other hand, it made musicians find interesting tricks.

For more advanced sound experiments, you can have a pick at those ones: (there are other/better ones but I don't have a direct link to them)

ltk : i mean pc demos ...the CGI part is quite promissing. a real time version would be simply great !

Keops: Yep, some of those have a much better sound!! 505 Overdrive is especially good and unlike the usual ST stuff I've heard.

It is very impressive the way the chips can be manipulated!

Buttler/Alarm: most old Atari ST chiptunes (pre 1992) are totally beep-blip-blip-beep indeed. Either you like it or you totally hate it - it's easier to like it when you grew up with it though ;)

- Then Mad Max once introduced digidrums (a tiny 4 bits sample on one voice) and that's all we had till 1992. Example: http://nectarine.dhs.nu//synth/mad%20max-wings%20of%20death%20level%206%20atari%20st.mp3

- Then some people came up (around 1992 afair) with something called SID Voice (Scavenger, Animal Mine, Jedi/Sector one), using a CPU interrupt. Example: http://nectarine.dhs.nu//synth/scavenger-tcc93%20invite.mp3

- Then Tao came up with a technique called SyncBuzzer (also using a CPU interrupt to help the YM2149)

So according to the year an Atari ST tune was made, you can have a quite different sound quality but it still remains chiptunish in the end with its share of high frequencies and its lack of bass. That did did not prevent many musicians from coming up with great melodies though ;)

hope it Helps ;)

As for Dune, who cares what platform they do stuff on, as long as they produce quality stuff. Go Mic, Go ;)

keops: you sound like you're preparing us for a disappointing platform there ;) Casio calculator watch demo time? ;)

Anyway, 4 top new tunes added to my mp3 collection from those links you gave, so big thanks. Chip <3! 505 overdrive was the worst of the lot to me, it lacks chipness.

Make that 6, with the two in your last post ;)

Buttler, I'd agree that the YM2149 is very much an acquired taste, I too jumped for joy when the first ST digisound manipulation came around (Quartet, followed by the many forms of Amiga modfile), but the YM grew on me more and more as the years passed, not least thanks to the dedicated efforts of the composers to get more and more from a very poor item of stock hardware.

The latest 505 stuff really gets away from the tinny squarewave nature of the old beast, I'd also recommend gwEm and Stu to listen to sometime as well.

Considering the YM2149 in the Atari ST has double the frequency of the AY-3-8910 used in the ZX/CPC even the blib-blob has it's own character.
Nowadays stuff definitely makes it hard to hear out, that this soundchip was already used on 8Bit machines.

It's hard for me to appreciate the ST sound because I grew up with an Amiga so good sound is something I always took for granted. I had a C64 before that but I never had a problem with C64 chip tunes.

Anyway, if I ignore the sound, the Dune stuff is well impressive and beautfully designed, like a lot of Atari ST demos. I wish the Amiga had stuck to doing slick demos like this instead of going through the "upgrade or get left behind" phase and trying to be a PC.

505-overdrive.mp3 is really made with a YM2149 ? (wow)

Yep CiH, Gwem <3 My fav is http://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=14855 I couldn't believe it when released.

It's an old comp, so chiptunes are a must :)
Fuck sampleslaves and softsynths.

But wow, that 505-overdrive.mp3 really sounds like amiga stuff.
