This question just came to my mind...

I was trying Trackmania Nations 3D mode, oldschool magenta and cyan glasses thingy, and I noticed how slow it is compared to normal rendering.

Wouldn't it be a lot faster if they used the z-buffer and parallax mapping to do the effect? Like the big sculpture scene in lifeforce.

I have nothing better to think about.

And in case no one understood the first time I'll rephrase:

Knowing the distance between both views (the eyes distance) is small, is rendering and distorting faster than rendering 2 different views?

Im not a coder but logicaly seen rendering 2 views will take dubble use of the shader pipelines, i think :)
But parallax mapping the entire screen twice after rendering the effect will use the shaders even more, depending on lots of things of course. But though I can see it working in demos I don't think it's a good general-purpose method.

i think it just simply renders twice - some ASUS 3d cards had a hack that was able to do that with a pair of special polar glasses (i assume they kinda screwed around with the view matrix to render in two)

yup,2 cameras and double-rendering....!

maybe NVIDIA could tell us more, coz Nadeo claims to be in close contact to them.!

btw.: letz use this Thread to find eachother in TM...lol.:

i´m "vyxor" and i think the Forever-Version ruleZ a lot.!
I like the game. It's fun, just has 4 keys (up down left right), it's challenging and all that: but the multiplayer ruins the game. IT's useless!

xer: I'm inclined to think that in stereoscopy even quite subtle cues are crucial to brain in reconstructing 3d, so faking with complex scenes (geometry/textures) probably will fail.
But maybe up to a certain point I'm wrong, dunno.

I used to have one of those cards. It came with LCD shutter glasses. I was never able to take advantage of it properly because my monitor's refresh rate couldn't reach the necessary insane rates.. and no monitor was really bright enough for it anyway.

I did at least try it once in Quake 2 in low resolution (for decent refresh rate). It worked as advertised, but everything looked pretty dim, owing to the fact that each eye spent half the time looking at the blackened lcd.

.. well, I suppose it was also because the lcd shutter was kind of dim even when it was 'open'.. Anyway, yeah. Dim and low refresh at low res, but it worked.
