What happened to flashtro.com?

category: general [glöplog]
Skrebbel: you don't understand? ;) More seriously, it's just about reducing bandwidth usage, that makes sens I think.

syphus: indeed, that will be added in the next update in the coming days.

druidster, ehh how does that make you reduce bandwidth, except by discouraging people from visiting your site?

well, opening a flash is 400kb, 1mb, .. depending on the size. Bots won't use that bw. Now, registration is just entering a user, a password and confirming it...I think it's not the end of the world ;)

I don't know if you remember but the registration was also mandatory on the original flashtro, so, I guess people will survive. And for those who can't, well, sorry ...

it's about bots? prrfft how many bots will download swfs? and if they would, can't you just add a captcha or something?

not that i care, i never saw the point of cracktros in flash (that's what it's all about, no?). i just think you're cutting your own fingers by scaring visitors away.

don't worry for me/us. No need of the scared people ;)

It's not a bad setup, but it's worth explaining your reasons on the front page. That's very bare now, though, so I guess since you're working on other updates, you'll be padding out that main page ;)

The last site, though, had a pretty strict cookie/session timeout thing that used to annoy me. Omg pls 2 let us log in 4 eva!

btw, just wondering... how perfect are these remakes? if they are like really 1:1, it might be useful sometime. but most remakes i've seen so far are more or less raped, as in, at least the scrolltext has been changed from the original, sometimes more... which kinda defeats the purpose of the whole venture, imho.

Looks good Irokos. Site is quite sluggish at least here at work though. Anyway nice to see it back.

Registration is really not a problem this time.

Seriously, loose the registration to watch stuff and put a captcha or honey-pot or human-ish question.

cygnused: He doesn't understand what the point of registration is when you can use a captcha or something else to iron out crawlers and such (which is a bit of a daft reason for having registration in the first place btw)
added on the 2008-08-19 09:30:46 by gloom gloom
gloom: yes, sure. the true meaning of flashtro.com is that you can really quickly enter an internet-cafe to watch some nice cracktros, imo.
and that without downloading any big files or smt.
added on the 2008-08-19 09:43:53 by gentleman gentleman
for some value of "quickly" as you have to have an account and login or register one, ..., validate it, login, ... *sigh*
added on the 2008-08-19 10:11:19 by p01 p01
poi, read above, he doesn't want visitors.
added on the 2008-08-19 10:14:22 by skrebbel skrebbel
No, the registration IS quick (no validation, you're always logged in) but the page itself isn't that quick (at least for me).

Sometimes registration is quite a pain in the ass but this time it took, what, 5 seconds and no need to log in after that (except once)
added on the 2008-08-19 10:25:33 by Serpent Serpent
that's still a much higher barrier to entry than having to fill a single input and click a button, or nothing at all ( and let the robot.txt file do the job of keeping (legit) crawlers away )

to clear up my point:

im talking about an inet-cafe visit when your not at home.
when you are on vacation/travelling/in the city for example..

so you can go there and "quickly" watch some cracktros,
as flash is always installed on those computers.
(so you basically just have to remember your login for flashtro.com ;) )

okay? :)
added on the 2008-08-19 10:45:41 by gentleman gentleman
You still have to log in, which is stupid.

Seriously; why is registration required? Is registration required to watch videos at XPLSV.tv? No, and that site surely generates a hell of a lot more traffic than this :)
added on the 2008-08-19 10:50:49 by gloom gloom
thats ofcourse true!
but they took over the old concept of flashtro.com and you have to log in.
the same thing is with intro-inferno. you have to log in.

i remember at first on intro-inferno you hadnt to log in. then later they changed it.

the interested people will recreate their account.
i also would have been a friend of taking over the old user-account data.
but they decided to do not and so the users that register there for cracktro.com
also get an account for intro-inferno, by that step..

Continuing an existing bad idea doesn't make it any less bad. :) One should perhaps view the rewamp as an opportunity to also make some changes to the site to make it more user friendly. Granted, flashtro.com might have some questionable content that someone might want to keep out of view, what do I know. :)
