Maybe I should start a demogroup called "Digital Piss".

I guess you've never worked tabs. Else you'd know just how dumb this sounds.

I have. I just prefer not using windowing systems inside of windowing systems. Having several browser windows on the task bar in windows is functionally almost identical to having several browser tabs in one window, except you don't have your browser sessions grouped together in the same way - mind you the comic mentions this whole web integration thing where apps and browser apps are presented in similar fashion to the user as a GOOD thing. Encapsulating your web browsing within tabs within browser windows is the exact opposite of web integration.

If there are improvements to be made to the way the windowing system works, then the correct place to make them is at the OS GUI level. Tabs may address some of the shortcomings of the OS, but that's a compromise at best.

Except this has not been properly done for a browser before.

Hence the bit about it being "nice", you twat. But it isn't revolutionary. So rather than "look, we've invented this whole new BRILLIANT concept cause we're the saviours of teh internets!", how about "in doing this browser we will use parts of the operating system the way every textbook on software design would tell you to".

Because the target audience never knew the loving caress of being a bitter Amiga freak? The comic is a pretty simplistic (but clear) outline for the average user.

Oh right. Cause the average user knows the difference between a process and a thread but has never heard of JIT compilers such as those used in Java VMs, Flash, etc. But even then, that's worse. Cause if they've never heard of such a thing, it will now appear to some of them that Google invented it. Which is what we call dishonesty.

So. Are you learning something today, little man?

...Well, yes. That you're a classic example that the fantastically deranged can be a good source of amusement on the internet.

Though honestly, that's nothing new coming from you, now is it? ;)

In fact, I could argue that you're actually just as evil as Google since you're doing nothing new here! Your kind of logic is flawless in that regard!

Doom: just by curiousity, do you happen to work on multiple documents in say PhotoShop ?

Shifter: I never said Google should be doing something new. But they should stop making a big deal out of a small thing and try to work on this saviours-of-the-internet attitude of theirs. Of course, that's blasphemy to a fanboy such as, evidently, yourself, so my apologies.

p01: Yes I do, and I really wish Photoshop would integrate better with the desktop than it does. There's a million other things wrong with the Photoshop UI, but at least it doesn't use tabs.

So why don't you open a new photoshop for every document you work on?
And use a new tv set for every movie/tv program you watch.

Flipping channels is so lame!
heh i use both tab and windows systems :

ctrl+n for whole new sites or searches,
ctrl+t for linked sites or images :)

Doom: but PhotoShop uses MDI, and that is exactly what Opera does and close-ish to what tabs are.

Rob: ;)

Personally I want Tabs grouping. What IE8b2 does in this regard is a good start but it can be way better. And of course droping a tab or group outside of the current window should open it in a new window, and maybe ask to create a session upon closing.

best way to manage tabs so far
added on the 2008-09-02 20:12:24 by Twinside Twinside
Rob: Indeed! As the great René Froger put it way, way back in 1992 already:

"Vandaag koop ik m'n derde videorecorder
Van nu af aan is er dus geen programma dat ik mis!"

Rob: Photoshop won't run multiple instances. But if it did, you would lose the ability to do things like copying layers between documents (which is not a UI issue). Sharing toolbars and palettes and such between documents isn't always an advantage either, though it does save screen space, but then again there are so many other ways Photoshop could go about doing that. Tabs would be useless because either you want to work with several documents at once, i.e. have them on screen at the same time, or you don't, in which case I would prefer managing them with the taskbar, the same way I manage my other windows.

Windows does let you group items on the taskbar, which addresses the same issue as tabs, but sadly it behaves very unpredictably so I always disable that feature.

Only being able to show one channel at a time on a TV set is a stupid limitation, too, and a lot of manufacturers try to work around it, because flipping channels IS lame. But it doesn't really compare because TV doesn't try to map the display to a workspace where you constantly manipulate the contents of each channel. If it did, and for all I know that's the next big thing, a windowing system (that is, ONE system that is consistently used by all channels in a similar way) would be ideal. Tabs would still suck.

Twinside: I like the concept but in practice I believe one level is enough.

p01: I'm not an Opera fan either, and I don't particularly like Photoshop's interface but Photoshop happens to do what I need it to do. If I could reconfigure the hell out of it, I would.
added on the 2008-09-02 20:19:06 by doomdoom doomdoom
FWIW you can reconfigure the hell out of Opera, and beyond. It has solid JS and CSS support, only some st00pid sites do retarded browser sniffing and give it broken IE code, or simply reject anything that doesn't pretend to be IE or FireFox.

By curiosity, again, which browser do you use ? is it customized somehow ?

Firefox 3, without tabs, and mostly not in full-screen windows. Windows sort of fucks up the whole idea of a GUI though by automatically bringing the active window to the front, so that's sort of annoying. Still looking for a way to fix that. I'm sure Opera could be tweaked to suit my needs, but FF does quite well with a couple of plugins.

opera is the best browser out there today, but it crashes badly in linux from time to time, and I welcome googles attempt and will try it when it gets released for linux (and maybe sooner)

added on the 2008-09-02 20:54:17 by thec thec
i mostly use safari, it just works
on my macbook pro, i find firefox deadly slow compared to safari
on ubuntu, firefox 3 seems to be okish, without being blazingly fast

i tried opera without being totally convinced, i keep it for compatibility testing purposes
Yay, first post using Chrome! \o/
