im conjuring several conspiracies, but i think the only way to clear them one way or the other would be to see the list now wouldnt it?
1) right, i'll just fwd concearns to another scene.org staff member when someone asks me about it, that'll really comfort folks.
2) ah, so since we _clearly_ have a nordic conspiracy, its perfectly fine to keep nurturing it, that'll also really bring great confidence to our staff.

seriously now, i truly believe that it's important for these issues to be made transparent. i dont mind playing the fool conspiracist this time since i know i wont be preaching it to others behind your backs undermining the original outreach intention of the thing, but i can imagine what the ones which lack faith on scene.org (as little as they might be) will think of the whole ordeal, and i am forced to agree with them that it doesnt look very unbiased at all. there is a simple way to clarify it though: transparency.
"anyone who has seen xx" and "just ask around" is not an acceptable answer to a promised list. and if i can think that way you can be sure plenty of others will think worst. even if they wont come on this thread and accuse you of anything. even if you make fun of them calling them lamers and conspiracist theorists. im not hoping for a perfect world where we all live in harmony, im hoping for transparency in our activites when transparency was promised.

as to that ridiculous "5 demokits for fr" "rumor" (magic, it's not exactly a rumor of you just make it up yourself...): if i remember this correctly, paniq got one demokit for masagin, that's it. since he won the pc demo compo, he got an extra graphics card (one of the quadro fx 5700s i think), which presumably went to tournesol or cp. "outside" the demokit thingy, kb got a demokit graphics card for the duration of the party after his original graphics card died during the scene.org awards (since we needed a replacement fast on a saturday night - of course we first asked temis); i'm not certain whether he later put that back into paniqs demokit or got to keep it, you'll have to ask him.
ryg, actually you are wrong here. we got 4 boxes iirc. we divided up the plunder so paniq, tournesol, kb and me got one each. the compoprize was taken by paniq.

Just want to jump in briefly to tell you a bit about the demobox kit list from my side of things.
As gloom mentioned before, we (NVIDIA) had to follow our usual privacy policy in these situations. It is our requirement that the actual list not be published. Each individual is welcome to reveal it if they wish, but we will not do it for them - it was not part of the agreement and I believe there was miscommunication about this subject.
The kits were distributed on a very simple set of criteria:
- First come, first serve was the first priority. I can tell you flat out that the first 30 groups who applied got at least one kit and that accounted for largest part of the distribution.
- We asked applicants to *try* to deliver a demo to the competition in exchange for the kit on an honor system. The machine is theirs to keep, all we asked was their general support for our attempt to help the scene grow in the US, simply by competing in NVScene. No catches, no strings attached, just try to return the gesture. Even if you didn't make the NVScene compos, our hope is that the demokit will be used to create demos.
- The demokit is distributed for the main purpose of facilitating demomaking. i.e. it's not distributed so it can be used as a compo box, a game box or a file server at home. We did ask questions to applicants hoping to discern if they were just trying to get a free computer or if they truly wanted a fresh platform to develop demos on. Some people readily admitted they probably wouldn't be making demos with it, or that they were simply looking for free PC parts, and those were turned down in favor of people who really needed hardware to develop demos on.
- We did ask less documentation from well-known sceners and groups who applied, since it didn't make much sense to request a list of previously released demos or any other kind of "proof of activity" from people who were already known for competing with "serious" prods. To some people this might be seen as bias, but I don't feel that is accurate. It was just common sense and a simple way to improve the process of distribution.
- Finally, I personally assigned a small fraction of the boxes outside of the distribution pool so I could give them out to some people who collaborated with NVScene in various ways, in one capacity or another, as a thank you. The reasoning for that is that they provided much needed help early on, and I felt they deserved something for it, especially if that something allows them to make cool demos. This didn't affect the larger distribution pool as it was previously planned.
We distributed 62 boxes to sceners in Germany, Norway, Finland, Sweden, Poland, Netherlands, Spain, France, USA, Canada, Japan, and more. A few additional boxes were given out as a thank you to people who did hard work for NVScene early on in several areas. The few remaining boxes are being used to support smaller parties.
I just want to stress we really tried to be fair and reasonable. We see the demokit distribution as a collective operation: we give a number of kits as support to the community in general, and the community supports us back, as a collective. If some people couldn't provide a prod, that is ok, just as long as they keep making demos. Those who did provide prods, got to participate in a great and hopefully historic event.

ryg, for making the nvscene-invitation obviously. i did not ask for a box, but as i understood paniq, the hardware was promised right from the start for the people who would make the invitation, so i happily took one.
