wade bashing day !

category: general [glöplog]
Having difference in taste is good, watching and commenting on stuff good because discussion is good!

And of course, there is nothing more fun than being an elitist douchebag and shittalk about stuff! :)

(Radiohead is a shit band!)

What I've noticed is that guys who work really hard on their productions accept that their work might not be perfect. They can take cricitism and they get a lot of it. Whereas the minimalist arty types seem to have this attitude that everything they do is perfect and any criticism is the result of ignorance or an inferior mind.

I find the above somewhat funny in the context of the 2 prods that started this discussion considering all the different stuff the people involved in both have done during the years..

still i don't feel the need to dis wade.. everyone's entitled to their opinions, and wade tries, some of the time, to actually be constructive.

I'm fine with Wade's (and everyone's) opinions, were they positive or negative. Everyone has different taste after all.

But this "the spec requirements make no sense for such a basic effect" in Cannapaceus comments just doesn't make any sense. First of all, it's not an opinion about the demo, but a statement about the code. Now I don't know if Wade is a great mastermind and knows how to make those effects with better fps or lower hw requirements, but I take that line as an insult that my code is crap. Secondly, that demo has more than one effect, so speaking of only one effect is just bullshit. Thirdly, I really don't think that requirement for geforce 8800 to run demo in FULL framerate on HD resolutions is too high.

And sorry Wade, I really don't mean to bash you or your opinions but that line just burned some nerves in my head :)

a) thats a generalization and therefor skewed of much rational to begin with

b) plenty non "minimalist arty types" have that very same attitude

c) perhaps if the anti "minimalist arty type" critics actually criticized rationaly instead of bluntly dissing others efforts and experiments, the "minimalist arty types" wouldnt be so defensive about their work to begin with. ever thought of that?

Lets face it. Many noise demos look you are bringing your television out of tune and then proclaiming that you have built a new broadcast station.

PS: could I request that you add a voting feature to threads so that I could thumb this one down?

this thread is nothing else than the common debate mainstream vs arty/ghetto.

if you want more thumbs up / less harsh comments, put less noise and more meaningful/recognizable objects on screen with euphonious music.

it's like putting a big cock on screen, you should expect to be bashed by the audience, whereas put sweet boobies instead and you'll please them far much more :p

I find reading Wade's comments very entertaining. The world would be much more boring place if everyone agreed on everything. ps, just remember the following: "if Wade doesn't like it - it's worth watching" is surprisingly good guide for choosing interesting demos. :)

I don't get it that people keep on looking at noise demos and keep on bashing them when they already know they don't like such products.

..in the same way that I don't get why people keep watching "conventional" demos and then bash them for "lack of originality" or "no story", when they already know they won't like them. It's nothing new, it's the demoscene. :)

gloom: as oposed to that telling someone who keeps repeating the same cliches that they're repeating themselfs is alot more constructive then telling someone who keeps exploring new things that they're only doing shit? you're a real brainiac indeed.

There is nothing wrong with only liking the more conventional demos. I just don't get why people like Wade still keep watching and bashing noise demos when they so clearly hate them.

i guess because its everyones right to like or dislike a certain prod or style.
if all people should stop watching prods they dislike (or even could dislike) we could just remove the piggie and thumbdown option, so you only get thumbs up because only people who like it rate it.
way to go .... NOT!

i like wade.
he thumbed up BPPB and Made of Bricks, which means that he has to be a nice guy!! ...OH, WAIT... ;-)

That may be true, but still I don't get it why people punish themselves by watching noise demos if they clearly don't like it. You wouldn't do the same with music I suppose. You wouldn't repeatedly buy music that you don't like, would be kind of stupid. Maybe you do, who knows :)
ps: What you just listed are exactly the same things, just seen from two different sides of the isle. You think something is a cliché and you telling them you don't like it is seen as constructive criticism from your POV, but when someone thinks something you do is a cliché they are badmouthing your daring new explorations of visual expression.

Again, it's the same both ways except one of the sides tends to wear the "moral high-ground asshat" more often. It comes down to preference really, which is utterly subjective and people will never agree on what's Good(tm) when it comes do demos (or anything else, for that matter).

therefore all noise demos from now on need to start with a disclaimer and a clear message on pouet stating smth in the likes of "warning, the following 4 minutes can not be pleasant for you if you liked Lifeforce a lot!!!'
rob: good noise demos vs bad noise demos, maybe?

Change the 4 minutes to 8 minutes and we're closer to reality ;)

i'd say wade's comments are mostly pretty good, but sometimes a little on the stupid/rude side, which I guess is the issue here.

Complaining about high hardware requirements for a basic effect, while actually having no clue as to what is involved, is pretty stupid. So is criticising something for showing 'lack of talent' while apparently not understanding the artform at all.

Anyway, looking forwards to seeing wade answer his critics in a demo :D Especially if it's showing more creativity as well style + technique.
