Setting up a real pouet.net BBS

category: general [glöplog]
Inspired by http://de.youtube.com/watch?v=TUG8GdMuEfQ
How are the general opinions about this?

For all who aren't too familiar with BBS, it would be like the oneliner, BBS and possibly a chat, fully run in a text console.

I mean sure ... it would decentralize pouet a bit, but be a possible fun thing for all people from "way back" ... and maybe we could get ROY/SAC on board doing some fancy ANSI-Artwork to make tho whole experience a lot prettier.

So what do you think?

Yeah, I've connected to some BBSes I found on the BBSNews wiki last night. Certainly fun stuff to finally experience that part of the "pre-internet", except for the fact that most of them are either pretty unpopulated or related to stuff I don't give a damn about.

I mean antidote BBS by taper^triad still seems to be pretty popular among commodore people, so why not give this a try for "oldschool pouet" (I guess for most "newer") pc folks it would be nothing but boring and uncomfy.

setting up telnet bbs for pouet.net is faggy idea anyway...

Well, not exactly for pouet ... but rather demoscene related.

Make it use the same database as the web one so it'll look populated :)
unssi: you best hope you don't have an account on our BBS (:

Anyway, as mentioned in another thread, haciend.bbs.fi ...

I haven't actually been logging in the past few days due to illness and such but I _am_ actually there and if you start a conversation I _will_ actually respond. Which is what BBS's are for.
Sounds like an interesting idea. I "call" Antidote BBS on a regular basis and it's fun to drop random weirdness in swedish-english moonlanguage on its oneliner. The BBS could be just the oneliner and some purdy ansi grfx, since most people download their files using other methods these days. I think few will also dig up old messages so just the handle and 256 bytes of buffer for text will do, skip postnumbers, conferences and other fancy stuff.

Gentlemen, start your compilers!

actually hanciend seems to be pretty perfect, as for demoscene related stuff, features and still seems to have a decent ammount of users. Surely gonna give it a "call" on and off.

Makes it pretty pointless to start an own thing, especially considering I have no past knowledge about BBSes anyways and lack the hardware to do a 24/7 multinode board.

As for downloads, I agree that would be pretty pointless, especially with pouet.net, ftp.scene.org, csdb, google, etc. around.

i think bbs can still hold some cool files that can be only found there... but

i smell bbstro's comming up =)
How about turning this "BBS" into a real "forum" with threads sorted by topic etc. to make it actually useful. Now THAT would be something...

...boring?

I like it as it is, actually :)

Why would we want (wow, four w-words in a row) to use old an inferior BBS-technology, when the current generation is SO much better?

With inferior BBS-technology you're refering to the current BBS, are you?! ;)
