Wanted - music (PSG/AY-3-891/YM2149) for demo

category: general [glöplog]

I'm working on my first demo for MSX (targeting MSX1, but it will ofcourse run on MSX2 etc. as well).

It would be nice to have some music for it. I'm not all that knowledgeable about sound hardware and music replay, but thanks to some recommendations from Hitchhiker, I have managed to get a "Protracker 3" replay-routine going (this one: PT3.7 replay).
Apparantly you can compose tracks for it using Vortex Tracker

I'm looking for a nice 'chippy' demo-like tune that sounds like music (ie. not so much dissonant experimental noise stuff).
I don't know how much the hardware makes a difference, but I will be calling the player routine @ 50Hz (PAL) and the sound chip will be either a AY-3-8910 (MSX1) or YM2149 (MSX2).

Anyone who can provide a tune? I don't mind if it has been released before, but it would be nice if it at least hasn't been used in a demo before.

If you can't get an original track, there's an archive with a bunch of Speccy tunes you can read (and convert to PT3) with VT2.

AY Riders are called to the rescue! :)
I want original music. :D

Nice tracker. Seems that only export in pt3 format. Is that format 100% compatible with PT3.7 replay?

I'll try it a little bit tonight (and tomorrow). Don't promise anything, just like to play with AY-3-8910 sounds.

One day I'll probably do a demo for Amstrad CPC or MSX. I like those machines.

I refuse to make YM2149 tunes for any MSX demos. On the other hand, if you were making an ST demo, I'd be happy to oblige.
What format sould the YM-2149 tune be in ? sndh or .ym ?

And no sid voice i gues, only YM and buzzer ?

what a shame to the ym-musician guys, who've just gotten so good at making the ym sound cooler and less nintendo than ever. these chips can do a lot more cool things than just "chiptune" or "experimental noisecrap", it's just that somehow the c64 scene never figured that out.

Grimmy: Thanks, nice link! I'll start looking there if I can't get an original tune.

ham: I have no idea on the PT3 <=> PT3.7 replay compatibility. I tried some some of the .pt3 files that were included with VT, adn they sounded roughly the same in the tracker and on my MSX, so I guess that it should work...

skrebbel: No disrespect towards musicians intended! It's just that from the MSX demos I have seen that I have seen so far the music has usually fit into one of those two categories! :)

Btw. I thought that the AY-3-8910 and the YM2149 were compatible since one is in the MSX1 and one in the MSX2 and my MSX2 can run MSX1 demos just fine? Or will I need to handle them differently?

Basicly they're the same chip.

Wiki: "It [AY-3-8910] was also produced under license by Yamaha (with minor modifications, I.E. a selectable clock divider pin, and a double-resolution but double-rate volume envelope table) as the YM2149".

It's enought to say that I make music for AY since 1991 and only THIS YEAR I discovered with some testing prog that actually I have YM2149 chip in my Spectrum, not AY, hahaha. :)

Anyway when I prepare tunes from AY into YM, I just change volumes slightly (a bit different volume tables) and the work is done.

The original Speccy PT3 player is currently to it's release 7 (you can grab it there, it's in the PTxTools package). I guess PT3.7 mean PT3 player release 7, so it should be OK with all PT3 music.
The modules should be compatible (i think the replay can also replay 3.5 modules correctly as well).

SDW: afaik there's no YM in MSX only AY and clones (the philips ones have a S-3527 clone made by philips).

hitchhiker: According to wikipedia (which ofcourse cold be wrong) MSX1 had the AY chips and MSX2 had the YM ones.

Ah ;D
The YM chip that is referred in the wikipedia article isn't the original PSG, it's an OPL3 one, a 2nd chip which was optional in msx2+ and included in the TurboR ones.

The wikipedia article says:

MSX1 - General Instrument AY-3-8910 (PSG)
MSX2 - Yamaha YM2149 (PSG)
MSX2+ - Yamaha YM2149 (PSG) + optional Yamaha YM2413 (OPLL)
MSXturbo - Yamaha YM2149 (PSG) + Yamaha YM2413 (OPLL)

The french page of wikipedia doesn't mention this (as a matter of fact it only mentions AY-3-8910), anyway the MSX (maybe not all of them ?) used this:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MSX-Engine

There it's said "a Yamaha YM2149 PSG-sound chip, compatible with a General Instrument AY-3-8910" for MSX1 but the manual of my MSX2 mention a S-3527, who's right ?

s-3527 ("msx engine") was made by yamaha, not philips (but it was used extensively in philips machines). besides (ym2149 compatible) soundchip functions, it also handles memory and keyboard/vdp interfacing.
