Making a real-time demo using your brain. Yes, it will be possible!

category: general [glöplog]
Well it's kind of possible right now but it won't be a high-resolution demo!

Researchers from Japan’s ATR Computational Neuroscience Laboratories have developed new brain analysis technology that can reconstruct the images inside a person’s mind and display them on a computer monitor, it was announced on December 11. According to the researchers, further development of the technology may soon make it possible to view other people’s dreams while they sleep.

The scientists were able to reconstruct various images viewed by a person by analyzing changes in their cerebral blood flow. Using a functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) machine, the researchers first mapped the blood flow changes that occurred in the cerebral visual cortex as subjects viewed various images held in front of their eyes. Subjects were shown 400 random 10 x 10 pixel black-and-white images for a period of 12 seconds each. While the fMRI machine monitored the changes in brain activity, a computer crunched the data and learned to associate the various changes in brain activity with the different image designs.

Then, when the test subjects were shown a completely new set of images, such as the letters N-E-U-R-O-N, the system was able to reconstruct and display what the test subjects were viewing based solely on their brain activity.

For now, the system is only able to reproduce simple black-and-white images. But Dr. Kang Cheng, a researcher from the RIKEN Brain Science Institute, suggests that improving the measurement accuracy will make it possible to reproduce images in color.

“These results are a breakthrough in terms of understanding brain activity,” says Dr. Cheng. “In as little as 10 years, advances in this field of research may make it possible to read a person’s thoughts with some degree of accuracy.”

The researchers suggest a future version of this technology could be applied in the fields of art and design — particularly if it becomes possible to quickly and accurately access images existing inside an artist’s head. The technology might also lead to new treatments for conditions such as psychiatric disorders involving hallucinations, by providing doctors a direct window into the mind of the patient.

ATR chief researcher Yukiyasu Kamitani says, “This technology can also be applied to senses other than vision. In the future, it may also become possible to read feelings and complicated emotional states.”

The research results appear in the December 11 issue of US science journal Neuron.

wonder whether the interpretation is really correct or if they did not just monitor some kind of short-term "cache"... (waiting to be "evaluated"..)

Yeah, i think seeing into dreams could be a much more complex process... But it would be nice to be able to record your dreams, and then we could have a dream compo at parties! :)

However, none of the realiable news site cover this yet, so we'll see.

radiantx: That will produce a real-time wild production. Not a demo.

I don't know about you, but I already use my brain when making demos.

i can't wait until this fantastic new technology becomes available. i always wanted someone to look into my brain, so they can see what i think and feel.

finally we have the technology to detect though-crime!

...and don't forget your daily dose of SOMA!

''Hug me till you drug me, honey;
Kiss me till I'm in a coma;
Hug me, honey, snuggly bunny;
Love's as good as soma."

No images of how it looks. Seems fake.

yes really revolutionary! this technology will seperate the world in two categories.
1. the ones that can make demos with it.
2. the ones that make the analysis computer explode and keep on coding normal demos.

Well... the progress is too slow, they managed to receive these pictures
with a huge machinery, not for home use! And yet these pictures look so bad. The brain-demo making ppl is far, far future imo ... However i like the idea.

i pity the coming generations. there will be no place to run, no thought they can hide. they will be social property and owned by technology. :(

Blood style changes of the brain of the person were inspected, to image in converting research team such as international telecommunication fundamental technical laboratory (ATR and Kyoto prefecture glory town) announced the figure and the letter which that person sees to the American scientific magazine neuron of success and 11 dates for the first time in the world. The team says “if technology is developed, also it is possible to remove the dream of the person who sleeps as the picture”.

With experiment, it can look at blood style such as brain, using “the functional magnetic resonance picture device (fMRI)”. First, you inspected the occasion where the staff and others of the team looked at the picture before the eye with this device, the blood style of the visual area of the cerebrum how changes.

The picture in square, length and breadth respectively expressing 10 lines and the figure etc by the fact that mass of 100 is color classified with the black and white. Approximately, per 1 12 seconds showing 400 pictures, it accumulated the data of blood style changes, it made the pattern of the picture and the program of the computer study which correlates brain activity.

fMRI means "the functional magnetic resonance picture device". JSYK

Also, what PetaDrive said.
