GBA Demos on the DS

category: general [glöplog]

Hi there!

I recently bought a flash card (M3 Real) for the DS and wondered that some demos from some certain demogroups dont work at all.

Has someone ever got demos from SFC or Matt Current to work on a NDS?
Or are they too much for the GBA mode in the NDS....

a) their too much for the GBA mode in NDS, it has no 8bit gameboy processor;
b) you can't run GBA games from a ds flash cart.

You need a GBA flash cart.

GBA demos I've tried with DS have worked just fine.

Huh, since when do GBA demos use the GB CPU? They run on the ARM. One of the CPUs in the DS is the same model used in the GBA, except it's clocked twice as high (in DS mode anyway), and the DS's graphics caps are a superset of the GBA's. I'm not sure how audio is handled in GBA mode, but I don't think that'd be a problem.

I thougth audio on GBA was handled in the 8bit processor.

Sauli: So the GBA link through the GBA Ram expansion will not work?

Exin: All of our demos run on NDS if you have a GBA flash cart. I don't know how well they work with RAM-expansions, but in theory they should work.

xernobyl: No, it's not.

Moose: Too bad. Some demos run in the NDS RAM. But not all. And i havent figured out how to do that GBA linking yet. I know they worked with the Supercard GBA on the GBA and the old DS. But that one isnt made anymore...

All the GBA demo's on pouet will run on the Nintendo DS, I've not come across one that didn't (yes, that includes the prods by SFC and Matt Current).

Be sure to use a SLOT2 device (or have a RAM expansion for your SLOT1 device -- not too sure how that all works) as SLOT1 devices (such as the R4 carts) can't run GBA binaries (not entirely true either, but still).

Does that make porting easy?

Porting?
GBA needs no porting, as far as I know. It run natively on the DS.

The processor is the same as in the GBA (ARM7TDMI) and runs at half the speed in GBA mode. GBATek has a lot of information about GBA/NDS hardware.

They work perfectly well in those expansion packs (EZ 3-in-1 here). As long as youre using Exploader pretty much anything will work (well i DID have a problem with one gba demo that would work only in the emu - the header was borked and i had no idea how to fix it).

Oh, while on topic, watch out for your cards format when using exploader - it seems OSX and Linux format vfat differently than windows. Exploader doesn't like that and hangs for some inane reason :/

Thanks. I will look into it. But i dont have a flash card. Only a 32MB Ram pak (SDRAM). Its probably impossible to run GBA Demos over it...
