its a bloody pain doing more than one thing in a single production

nah, less waiting / arguing. the only downside was that having MSVC, 3DSMax and Buzz running at the same time used to be kindof slow :)

doom is sickeningly talented actually. Its quite annoying :)

Did all three aswell. In many productions too. But I think there is noone that excels in all 3 disciplines. Dane/Booze Design is the only one I can think of, that is somewhat close to demoscene polymath wizardry. :) Oh, and paniq too. :)

gargaj: Actually, doing the music AND the sync/design is a huge advantage (if you have an ear/eye for both things of course).

on another note, did you ever notice that "dubmood" is nothing but the reverse of "doombud(dy)"?!

The thing I find hard is to keep the creativity up when, at the same time, dealing with code. Although you can do nice effects just tweaking a few params on basic code, it's also easy to let the code limit your creativity.

dubmoods can't spell, see pouet threads!
trace: yeh its hard isnt it.. I have'nt released any coded demo, only releases as graphician, but I code game tech for a living.. so understand the creative artistic / code split :) reason why I choose to do gfx rather than code at home, well in the past anyway..

this could almost be a new "category" in scene productions, one for solo producers striving not to beat the hardware, or 20k limitations but to be a complete and whole creator...integrating all aspects of creative forces (visual, audio and programation) it certainly requires "something" a bit unique to be able to do all three (well)...whether it's insane talent or insane desire to experience three levels of pain rather than just one...i don't know. :) but there's something in it.

just thinking about this is interesting. like what kind of effect it has on a person to PERFECT all creative areas. i wonder if it makes to a more complete human, with extra hightened senses (hearing, visual, thought...) :)

ok. too much. going to watch that statix prod and some others mentioned here. see if these guys have the answer to the universe, or something :P

or a less ridiculous expectation: potentially a more "complete production", with a tightly unified design/experience coming from a single direction.

If there are any musicians you think are good coders too, what they really are are coders who are good musicians.

lind, yeh, i think so :) coders and musicians are basically doing the same thing at the end of the day (sequencing statements = notes into a code sequence = song pattern). So the good coder = good musician rule is somehow natural. but good graphics artist = good coder...wth?! :P

ok, i know there is structure to even graphic art, but it just seems weird.

Disagree.

Rule was maybe the wrong word. :} but the coders who do seriously give music a try seem to be better at it than they could be at graphics. I can remeber lots of examples of this crossover working very well in the scene, with coders creating some very nice music, esp in a technical sense.

however, coder graphics is usually the worst kind of graphics you can imagine :) that's a generalization because the people mentioned in this thread disprove it as a rule. but generally i think coders can relate to music creation more, and vis versa

I would be hard pressed to say that coding and music go together naturally -- a good comprehension of music theory and a feel for a good melody are hardly similar to the requirements of being a good coder (I do both btw)... But yes, visit some tracker scene IRC channels, and be surprised by the amount of guys who also code beside their musical endeavors :)
Can't speak for the graphical side of things though.

I've done all three... no that i've been succesful at any of them though :-)

hello: coders can't paint! ask iq/rgba or blueberry/loonies ;P

In my case it's true.

I usually do all three...Rarefaction (though the music was mastered horridly I'll admit) is an example, though the graphics was pretty much split 50/50 with Ehale.

Rarefaction I mean :P

I remember that Dune / Orange was a pretty decent coder too... "You am i you am the robot" is a pretty good example, as well as the lighting effect everybody is doing, which I believe was first conceived by Dune for Pager 11. But I'm not entirely sure, about the latter.

i'm a great coder, my music is fantastic and my graphics are worldfamous. the only important aspect of being a demoscener i suck at is posting random shit on pouet :(((

Um, what about AND? He's released several demos acting, as far as I know, as a one-man-army. I particularly liked 604...

For those of you checking .nfos at home, AND worked with Sly and Synsun on 604, and with Cybermag on Zoom 3, and so on. So never mind.
