stupid old sayings

Quote:
You can't have your cake and eat it.

That's another one of these which people always get wrong. In fact it's "You can't eat your cake and have it." which makes slightly (as in infinitely) more sense :)

it might make more sense but i'm pretty sure that no one is getting it wrong because there's nothing to get wrong, 'have your cake and eat it too' is how it goes
"People in glass houses shouldn't throw stones", which some comedian proved to be wrong, and in fact only people who are trapped in glass houses should throw stones.

"Exception that proves the rule"

Ah, now... apparently that one does make sense if you realise that the word "proves" is used in an archaic sense, meaning "tests". But most people just assume that it means "there's an exception to the rule, therefore the rule is correct". I've never figured out the proper way to use that expression though, so... um... yes, that saying is still stupid.

Quote:

impossible to translate without loosing the true meaning :) and yes, it's a very stupid Turkish old saying. it's slang of course.

a poor attempt of translation would result something like;
Quote:
I willl kick/hit/fuck the pussy, sound will echo from the hill.

gasman: interestingly, the hungarian equivalent would be "an exception strengthens the rule" - so yeah, i guess we all got it wrong :)

"Exception that proves the rule"

I've heard it way too many stupid people quoting that, believing it makes them look smart..

A: All rules have exceptions
B: x has an exception
..this does not imply that x is a rule!

Also, if all your rules have exceptions, you're living in a crappy world!

(or you just suck at figuring out the correct set of rules)
