Do you like Gouarud or Phong?

Hail the ignorance! I guess someone got stuck in 1994 :)

I think another for reason for spherical harmonic lighting to not spread in demos, besides the immediate limitations of the technique, is the complexity (ie. they're alot harder to implement than per-whatever direct illumination).

uttu: Maybe it is also because it is out of fashion to have demos of the style:

AND NO COMING UP
(wait 10s)
THE WORLDS FASTEST
(wait 10s)
SPHERICAL HARMONIC LIGHTING
(wait 20s)
(fade in slowly revoluting cornell box)
(scroll in box saying "123123 ITERATIONS PER SECOND")

Coding is NIL - the looks count.

coding is _not_ NIL - just without the look :)

Some demo viewers (especially those on pouet.net, to be cynical) definitely have this attitude. Anyway, you can show off effects without all those description texts too :)

sure the looks count maybe more than the code nowadays, but not many artists can make good looks from bad code, so saying that code is nil somewhat misses the point. Personally i think the best demos are the ones that do use new ideas and effects, but as part of the scene, not as a scene on its own.
