ASSEMBLY 2009

category: general [glöplog]
Also, could somebody shed some light on this nugget:
Quote:
Contrary to common belief, various sources confirm that early revisions of Gravis Ultrasound soundcards were available already before 1992.

I'd love to know more about these unheard sources of confirmation. Especially since there's no credible base for it outside of this post.

prolly its just the voices of reason telling to asm orgas that they need to accept gus? ;)

anyone have an extra gus extreme btw? i think i have all the other gusses in my collection already...

also, perhaps some people had some test versions of the card back in 1991?

I guess I could lose one, but honestly... why would you want one? :)

Prototypes were definitely around at that time, but all things considered:
Quote:
All platforms commercially available prior to and including December 31st 1991 are accepted to the compo.

I can't for the hell of me remember being able to buy a prototype GUS in stores back then and don't give me that "it's just a soundcard in an allowed computer platform" bullshit either. Plenty of platforms in the compos have hardware buses and expansions that would render the whole idea of that compo more moot than Mooty mcMootson.

bah. let's just be happy that gus is allowed. yes?

They should probably allow Amiga 4000 too, as I'm sure it was also prototyped as early as '91.

There is not much detail when first commercian GUS was sold. Big marketing campaing started at summer 1992 but it was rev 2.1 aldready. Atleast some earlier versions was commercially available because 1.7 has been spotted here in Finland.

1991, therefore exactly as Creative Labs brought their Sound Blaster Pro on the market, a common development of Advanced Gravis and Forte Technologies came on the market: the Gravis Ultrasound (GUS).

Soud Blaster Pro was launched May 1991.

Also please note that 1991 is printed to all GUS boards. :)

Bera: but can you find one single demo from '91 that has GUS-support? :)

Oh, and there's 1991 printed on the A600 board too, doesn't mean it was released that year though

Hell, can you find one single demo from 1992 that has GUS support?

All that I can think of is Jungly Kitchen from Twilight Zone, but it was only started in '92, and wasn't officially released until 1993.

Rather than argue that the GUS was a theoretical concept or whatever, you should just ask that allowing it be a gracious little exception to the rule.

In case someone out there has been inspired by all this GUS-talk: I have a 1993 Gravis Ultrasound Rev. 3.4 lying around. I will send it to anyone paying the cost of shipping, otherwise it is getting tossed within the next couple of days.

I'm buying airplane ticket to asm2009 and wonder if party schedule is already available somewhere. Or at least what's the time estimate when it will be available?
