new ascii collections

category: offtopic [glöplog]
eventhough amiga ascii is in a semi-hibernating state, there are still smoe releases from time to time, and people are drawing constantly... so i think having a thread where newest ascii collections get posted is most appropriate.

i'll have a start with a colly by swedish amiga artist dMG, "in de divina proportione speramus", released last night.

it's downloadable at http://spetsnaz.su/dmg/ascii/dS!-dive.txt. enjoy, and remember that dMG loves requests - and i love good ascii logos in demo release infofiles. so you know what to do.

here it might be appropriate, for all collcetions to come, to paste the amiga ascii viewing guide for dummies, excerpted out of dmg's latest colly:

Code: _ _______ ____ _ _) (_ _ __|_ _|___ · [ASCii ViEWiNG FOR DUMMiES:] · · · ___________________________________________ Amiga ------------------------------------------- Use ED, MultiView or (preferably) CED with either Topaz, Topaz+ or P0T-NOoDLE fonts. 640x256 (PAL) or 640x240 (NTSC) is the recommended screen resolution. PC/Windows ------------------------------------------- Download and install this pack of fonts: http://ts.asciiscene.org/htm/t!s-af.htm and use either Topaz+ or P0T-NOoDLE size 8 or 16 for optimal viewing. Have in mind that this collection was made using the Amiga character set, so most standard fixed width pc fonts won't display it correctly. Using these fonts will bring you closer to the viewing experience on an Amiga than any other currently available alternative for this platform, not counting UAE ofcourse Repeat this mantra to yourself as many times as you deem neccecary: I will _NOT_ use AcidView to watch this!!!! I will _NOT_ use PabloDraw to watch this!!! I will _NOT_ use AcidView to watch this!!!! I will _NOT_ use PabloDraw to watch this!!! I will _NOT_ use AcidView to watch this!!!! I will _NOT_ use PabloDraw to watch this!!! I will _NOT_ use AcidView to watch this!!!! I will _NOT_ use PabloDraw to watch this!!! I will _NOT_ use AcidView to watch this!!!! Do the only sensible thing. Watch this collection in a normal text editor. This ascii release uses Unix style line breaks. That means that you will NOT be able to watch this using notepad since it only handles files with CR/LF formatting. If you don't have any other options, you can use wordpad. Adding CR/LF to this file makes baby [insert suitable toddler of your religion here] cry. I figure the majority of the rest are (hopefully) sane enough to leave this file unaltered, promises of crying divine children put aside. I will _NOT_ use AcidView to watch this!!!! I will _NOT_ use PabloDraw to watch this!!! Linux/OSX/Other ------------------------------------------- The only option i can come to think of (besides running UAE/CED) is using Cleaners AnsiLove package which is an ascii (and ansi) to png renderer written in php. http://ansilove.sourceforge.net/ Or talk to truck. Maybe his propaz bdf's will help you achive your goal...

I will _NOT_ use AcidView.
I will _NOT_ use AcidView.
I will _NOT_ use AcidView.
I will _NOT_ use AcidView.

Repeat forever. Cripes that program SUCKS.

Also, my "Propaz" font in ttf, bdf, and linux console is available for anyone, just ask. I'm sure I could convert it into .fon or some other format if need be.
Acid View simply rocks. I'll use it forevah! Buit-in topaz makes irokos happy.

Dude it SO sucks.

But yes. Built in topaz rules. This is why I'm happy I discovered a3b ...

http://sourceforge.net/projects/a3b/

(The autoscrolling in it rules so much more than acid view. But then, the autoscrolling in my plumbing repair and not getting paid properly rules more than acid view.)
I don't get dMg's nor you point about Acid View. What's so wrong with it?
It displays ASCII the way they should be displayed, not like those torrents site which fuck everything up for example.

it's always a matter of comparison. if you take torrent sites, of course acidview is better. but if you take CED as the absolute ideal, then acidview doesn't come really close.

also, acidview has some fucked up bugs about fullscreen mode, thats why we unfortunately had to show evoke entries in windowed mode. next year we will definitely use something else than acidview.

irokos: I've used it at Breakpoint for the compos the past few years.

It _sucks._ It had issues with the beamer (displayed at least one entry too short, because it couldn't synch to fullscreen... on the same machine the demos ran on. Demos... switched/synched to fullscreen fine. AcidView? "No I think I will suck now."

Oh there are just so many others, in short, I won't use it again for a compo. It just SUCKED ass too much, so much I left myself several notes so I did not accidentally use it again. I have found a few other replacements; in fact, I was offered one the minute I got outside and said "that sucked, not only was I not prepared for that, but Acid View SUCKS."

It may work fine for your own personal use but it just SUCKS for showing entries in a compo.

What I want/need is a proper compo-mode thing.

Finally, having TRIED to use it and have it fail miserably, I just have to say that Acid View SUCKS. People who view/draw ansi/ascii _deserve_ a better app.
Allright. Thanks for your explanations =)
I'll keep on using it to view asciis tho. It even can browse through .zip archives, which is awesomelish. Well. I definitely get your point when it comes to party organizing and stuff. Titan could actually try to work on a sweet and better app maybe. I'll keep you informed =]

It _is_ a reference point, and it WILL do it right IF someone has a clue what they're doing. You do.

And yes, a new app would be good, I'm thinking either Cleaner's start or the a3b one. And Nikomen and I talked about it after Breakpoint and he said he was thinking about doing it, using tools he had available...

and of course it should work on iphone/ipod touch (:
okay, tools question cleared, lets discuss about collies again! =)

I like collies! They are nice doggies.

Had some really good words about ascii at Boozembly as well last night, and I think I said something about "I should get one displayed on the HUGE screen at MAIN."

I should totally get that done. To the #ascii , batplant!
i've made an app which displays ascii 100% like ced both windowed and fullscreen running on all platforms supporting sdl/opengl.. i thought you already had the beta dip?

Truck: I talked to H2O two days ago about trying to organize that at Main, even as a unofficial compo - it seriously would be more than awesome.
Sooo, H2O currently is on vacation. I don't have any clue about when he'll get back. But well.

Dipswitch: and I'm not the only one coming from Finland (:

We really hated missing Evoke, so it's good that we'll see some of y'all in France.
i'd still like to test yoki's viewer =)
