Astonishing 3D mandelbrot renderings

category: general [glöplog]
ok, i got it... they used the formula but just in 2D. not in 3D. easy.

as said the formula popped up as I had already made some 4k with mandelbrot renderings. which told at the end "establishing solar science" and fuck it happened after somewhat 20 (right?) years there came a improvement to the good old formula.. I could not say how much I was disturbed since mandelbrot seemed to be some simple way to get cheap results and i dunno if anyone had already done that in 3d my idea was to render it as a smooth heightfield since it looked already 3d some 20years ago.. you can find my olf 4k also in the zippo.. Now its not the best use of the formula but atleast noone ever had done this (seen this patterns) before.
btw i found some "similiar" patterns in an justin timberlake (love sex magic) spot, so i'm not the only one who could get inspired by such patterns.. hope this explains stuff, i think i will do a distance field (broccoli) version of that 4k too, in the next decades..

olf!!! i'm too tired.. thanx for research, that mandelbulb could lead to an extreme 4k, since it includes so much patterns.. ( but mostly giger-broccolis :) )

OOh. Hardy^tRSi = shroom. If i had checked first i would have laughed at his comment. He is the guy who told me 5 or 6 times that he hates me at mainparty. :-)

Sorry that i offended you as a result... i was pissed off.. And yes, it looks like broccoli.. nam.

I had time to make a new video. It's a little zoom in the fractal.

doom, this proves that you can zoom and have no problem with normals or anything even with the simple 4-point gradient estimation.

I have used LOD here. The contact-epsilon used in the distance field raymarcher depends on the distance from the point to the camera and the field of view: eps = k * t / sqrt( 1 + focalLength^2) or something similar, you do the math again, I lost the paper somewhere.

My goodness, that's beautiful.

eh, glad you like it. I have youtubed the two videos:

I'm uploading another one tomorrow (a Julia set, ala Kindernoiser)

Looks great, iq! :D Guess that we'll see this realtime in a demo in 2-3 years perhaps, using the latest GPU :) Your camera flight reminded me of Stargazer's 2d collage zoom scene.

xtr1m: that's becuase it was IQ who coded that too.

nice work IQ :)
what rendering time do you get for each frame in these animations by curiosity?

So Zest, you kept a low profile for a while, but now you've decided it's time to go back to the old ways or what?

iq happy, mandelbrot happy, me happy... gloom not happy ?

JSYK Benoît Mandelbrot is a 85 year old polish/french/american mathematician : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beno%C3%AEt_Mandelbrot ; and Julia wasn't his wife but another (dead) french mathematician.

gloom: I don't believe you.

omg, for one second I had this paranoid and scary flashback... what if I AM KEOPS and do pron effects without my other me knowing, like in Fight Club??? Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

aftu, I think everybody in this thread knows who's Mandelbrot...

iq: Err, then you should check your Skype logs dude..

iq: Your work reminds me of this: BB Image

The first time I ever saw that pic, I could imagine myself flying around what seemed to be, infinite caverns. :)
the third and last video, a JuliaBulb: here

Wow, that looks amazing. Particularly when it's almost transparent, with just the twisty string bits.

It's the last video though? I'm hoping it's the last before something, not just 'the end' :D

I am speecless. I think you ruined the game :DDD

amazing quality in vids :)
but as said: this wont go realtime ( yet ! ) , only if you like to look at low-quality stuff !
so lower expectations !
thanx for some vids showing how it would look tho :) ( and for only showing the tip of the iceberg aswell :) )

now HBC+IQ pleeze ;) :p
iq: no need to be sorry, you've brought us a ton of joy with those 3 videos already :)

If you're planning to abandon it here though, would you consider releasing the source? I'd love to explore this, but it's *way* beyond my maths skills. And I'm guessing it *is* realtime with GPU & low enough resolution? (Ok, 128x128, 5fps or something won't be fun, but it'd be enough to make an interactive toy out of, which could be used to set animation data for producing videos...)
