Now that I think of it, that's probably what is going to happen with demos too, once everyone can download 100megs of video in 5 minutes...

Or maybe when that's possible the interactive elements (such as changable sine bob parameters) from 80's demos will return to the scene. But then again, even today we see demos with slightly randomized effects, which could never be done in a streaming video file.

Everybody can make a slow-ass game, but which kind get posted on the front page of slashdot (and a number of less icky sites) -the 100Mb or 96k kind? There's a niche for everything ;)

Mod files are awesumm,

They sure save a lot of disc space
if rewrite a mod file thats 69,1 KB and save it as a windows wave file then it's over 37 Megs I need a decruncher and a good one

mike*wtsoftware: not to speak about soft-synth that take say 4Kb and once saved as raw wave can take up to 80Mb, and keep the same synch capabilities of a track based music.

It really surprises me that there are so few random elements in demos. The way many demos look, it should not be too difficult to do some randomizing, and it would make it much more interesting to watch a demo several times.
Yes, it makes a lot of sense that in ten years or so, demos HAVE to be either partly interactive or partly randomized, because by then we will not just have higher bandwidths and diskspace, but also better video codecs, faster pc's for their decompression, etc. .
After all, if you had something like 100 TB diskspace, would you care if an 8-min-demo would be 1 GB long? I say, that in ten years there will be only intros, interactive demos and video-demos.

I think the random element is the best when subtle.

I agree with Gargaj on that matter. I remember the progressive demo (or was it genetic?) at alternative party failing to bring forward anything interesting. The results tend to be best when strictly controlled by a mad human brain :)
