scene music stolen

category: music [glöplog]
I generally think more people think they're completely original then the number of people who realize that stealing is a part of how culture is made.

I also would have to say that the people who play classical instruments (ei guitars and what now) are totally the worst about pretending everything they do is original... but maybe this is de-railing the thread a little

...I think my start of it was about uh... 13 - 14 years ago. I was playing a lot with computers and music, doing MOD trackers and DOS based programming for, you know, just demoscene stuff. And that was before VST was kinda introduced to computers...

Sigflup I agree. If culture is viewed as 'refining the arts', the idea of stealing is pretty much built-in. After all, how can you refine something that isn't there to begin with :) .. As for the classical instruments, I think you should definitely separate performance from the actual composition. Given the genre, for most of the classical musicians it's after all about refining the art of performance (interpretation, technique etc.) than the actual composition. But like you said, let's not de-rail the thread too much, just a few thoughts on the subject!

If composition and performance are kept separate, how would you classify this Deadmau5 thing for instance? Do you feel that it refines or adds to the melody in either sense? What about other poueteers (what a fancy title btw), care to share your thoughts on this?

If I was to compare the melody of Isoljator against FML, much of the finer details (variation / movement within the melody) that make Isoljator musically interesting to me even to this date, have been stripped on FML and the melody thus is rather static and single-dimensional. It's nice to hear that even so, the plain melody does work on FML's build up bit to some extent.

As I myself am musically pretty much of the sort who gets sub-consciously influenced by whatever I might've listened to and liked, claiming complete originality on this Deadmau5 issue would be hypocrite. Sub-conscious influence meaning, I might hear a neat melody, forget about it, and find myself jamming on a similar theme six months later. And who knows, maybe there is a similar age-old 'Isoljator' melody out there. Safe to say I haven't come across one yet, but anyone is much obliged to enlighten me.

As far as obvious sampling (or sometimes influences as well) goes, I've always tried to mention my inspirational/sample sources somewhere (take f.ex. Variform or Ultimatum to the World). I'd expect to receive the same recognition in return, at least for those snippets of my works that can be labeled original enough. Not that I could claim full originality in this case anyway, since it was me and Mel Function who co-wrote the melodies ;)

Deadmau5 is an untalented hack with a dumb mask and most of music is terribly boring.

It is unmistakeably 'borrowed' from Kewlers, but if it's only that little bit I would say it's more a 'tribute' than a terrible rip (like Loose was) but I don't know how much it's featured. You should at least get a credit for it.

I must say i like Isoljator much better since it is actually more layered and profound than the doodling Deadmau5 does.

I beg to differ as

Musicline
ACE Tracker
Noisetracker
Flextrax
Fasttracker 2
Octalyser
S.O.T.E. Tracker
Blipp Blopper

among others are from Sweden :)

evil: Exactly, there's Fasttracker 2 in your list. (I think we had that discussion already... :P)
For me this is picking the cream out of a good and interesting song and adding it to some uninspired tune to give it something remarkable. No matter how long the sequence is, it's just not the correct way to not credit or at least ask the original composer when doing this.
I think it's a good idea to show your disapproval of their methods (email:) and see how they react.

Impulse Tracker is the most retarded tracker ever. No discussion, its a fact.

I like how much you've grown over the years, dubmood.

dubmood, you have clearly never tried to write a XM player that is 100% close to the original. OK, enough troll feeding for today.
so, this HtheB-guy... What are the songs? I don't have iTunes or lastFM-radio, and I just de-installed Spötify. Can someone rip the songs and make a torrent? :) No, but seriously, I'd like to know.

Little Bitchard - Isoljator
Deadmau5 - FML (Theme starts at 04:02)

This is of course just a melody line and a bassline, but the resemblance is pretty close.
If I remember correctly Deadmau5 approached gloom a while back, asking permission to use some visuals, so he obviously knows of the scene.
