Random Apple Bashing thread

tft: you could do all that with the original iphone too, but only with the built-in ipod app playing. It's always had multitasking, but only for a couple of apps.

tft, isn't the camera and the mp3 players separate chips in the phone? :-)

I have one of those and I'm perfectly happy with it. It still has reasonably good battery life and the aluminum case is superior IMO to the plastic case of the 3G and 3Gs. My warranty expired about 2 years ago. So what? I will say that I'm really liking the new one and will probably get one.

And then he modded me a troll for saying that consumer electronics had a to short lifespan.

Actually, an application that's running but doing nothing should use no CPU time. It should just inform the OS of what events trigger what parts of the app, and as long as those events don't occur, the app isn't running any code at all. That goes for well-written apps in a battery-oriented OS, at least, but Apple should be able to enforce that sort of thing with their closed platform and all.

doom: they're not checking the quality of the code at apple, just looking for violations of their developer agreement and obvious bugs. If an app has a bug where it starts eating CPU when it's supposed to be in standby, they're not likely to catch it. And assuming the apps are all well written is pretty hopeful ;)

"... it seems that the majority of iPhone 4s do have an aversion to being touched as sticky fingers are causing huge drops in signal strength."

"... a speed test performed by one reader demonstrated the download connection dropped to less than a third (from 840Kb/sec to 263Kb/sec) when they picked up the phone..."

I was here to post this one :D
psionice: Not saying they do, but they could if they wanted to. It would be easy to test if an app is using CPU time when it's idle in the background, then give all apps a battery rating that shows up in the app store. Also there are measures the OS could take to limit the power consumption of background apps, plus it's trivial to keep the user informed when background apps are using up the battery.

The point is that multitasking doesn't have to mean anything to battery life, especially not for a company that already rules its platform with an iron fist. So it sounds like an excuse for just not bothering.

We have discovered the cause of this dramatic drop in bars, and it is both simple and surprising.

Upon investigation, we were stunned to find that the formula we use to calculate how many bars of signal strength to display is totally wrong. Our formula, in many instances, mistakenly displays 2 more bars than it should for a given signal strength. For example, we sometimes display 4 bars when we should be displaying as few as 2 bars. Users observing a drop of several bars when they grip their iPhone in a certain way are most likely in an area with very weak signal strength, but they don’t know it because we are erroneously displaying 4 or 5 bars. Their big drop in bars is because their high bars were never real in the first place.

We have gone back to our labs and retested everything, and the results are the same - the iPhone 4's wireless performance is the best we have ever shipped. For the vast majority of users who have not been troubled by this issue, this software update will only make your bars more accurate. For those who have had concerns, we apologize for any anxiety we may have caused.

I don't buy it. "Bars" is only one thing, but when calls start getting dropped, that's mechanical.

Hahaha! "Yeah, that problem we have with our phone? It's not real!"

Goddamn Apple :D

does that mean they're basically releasing a patch that will show maximum bars no matter what? :)

It was also demonstrated that the signal was completely lost, similar to calls getting dropped. I'd be amazed if their code made the phone show bars without any connection at all.

That said, it does have a very beautiful design :) Sleek and simple.
