Capped3

category: general [glöplog]
Hey all

So I put a slightly updated UI on Capped.TV last weekend.

Lots of fun updated UI bits, and it should work on pretty much everything from Firefox to Opera to even IE6 somewhat.

Also, if you use a browser that supports HTML5 video, you'll get fancy animated thumbnails of various segments of that demo spliced together. This should work on any recent browser builds supporting h.264 or theora. You can of course turn this off with a link on the bottom of the index.

There's also a simplified and streamlined interface for phones and smaller screens, selected automatically if your browser supports style-sheet selection. The thumbnails may not work on older iPhones though.

The player is still flash, but I'll convert this to HTML5 soon enough. The html5 player will probably use strictly h.264 till I can lay aside some CPU time to convert them to webm or such. After that, they will be both h.264 and webm [and the uploading page will let you submit both directly as well].

So feel free to test the new layout, report any compatibility bugs or etc, or performance of the thumbnails [they should load in real time as long as you have about 2 mbit to spare].

Please give me any comments you have on it <3

Absolutely top notch update, micksam7. A visually fabulous update to an already stunning site.

Yep, awesome. The previews are really great!

There's a few issues on the iphone though.

First, the layout: it's nearly identical to the desktop version, but the panel on the left is missing and the search bar is moved. That doesn't really help, because the layout is the same and there's just empty spaces where these items should be. The main content is a thin strip in the centre of the page - actually, all that exists in the sides is the decoration on the logo. If you could hide the side parts of the logo on mobiles, the layout would be pretty much perfect.

2nd: the 'double tap to zoom' zooms in on the video description text. Ideally it should pick up the whole container, so it shows the preview too. Again, if you removed the sides of the logo so the page is much thinner, it's no issue.

3rd: the video previews on the iphone are a bit.. weird :) They don't play in the page, so I see just a thumbnail which is fine really. But the thumbnail contains a play button which I then expect will play the demo.. it doesn't, it plays the thumbnail video fullscreen! I was wondering for a while why you're giving us really shitty quality videos with no sound now :D Actually it's kind of cool as a quick preview, so long as people are aware that it's a preview and not the full video.

Oh, and global trash 2 is kind of messed up. The preview doesn't work (actually the preview does link to the actual video page for this one, for bonus confusion) and the mainline mp4 video just plays audio on my iphone (it shows the quicktime logo in place of the video, indicating that there's a problem with the video stream format perhaps?)

I'm on a 3gs btw with os 4.0.1. Give me a shout if you want anything testing. (Also, if you don't have an iphone/ipod but you have access to a recent mac, install the iphone SDK. It comes with an iphone simulator that runs mobile safari nicely so you can test!)

i just hope firefox 4 lands on time with the support for all of this,
using ff4beta1 atm but it still has some glitches.

Wow, incredible. The video previews were spot on, actually gave me goosebumps seeing a lot of my favourite demos come to life; certainly will help with hooking in more viewers in my opinion.

Excellent work, thank you Micksam7! :D

Is there a way to consult the upload queue to know what the upload status is?

Technically it is a neat update, but I must say that I feel the design looks very 1996.

as my oneliner back then already expressed, im with gloom on that issue :)
i like it, could be way uglier !
thanx for capped.tv btw :D
of this is 1996, the previous site must have been 1990.

Gloom/Maali - I was trying to duplicate my capped kiosk look, which yes admittedly is a bit crappy. :)

iPhone issues - I'll fix the sizing in the swapped css sheet. The video play bit is due to Safari, but I'll try to make it more clear. Original/Second gen and possibly the 3G iPhones don't support the h.264 params I've chosen [as I've had to learn the hard way] so I need to re-encode the mainline MP4s again for them.

Global Trash 2 - Encoder threw up on the mpg file, I'll stab at it some.

Monthly views being greater than total views - Whops.. Forgot a param somewhere..

Firefox 4 - It works in 3.x, I'll poke at a FF4 build when I can though.

Also, can someone test to see if the animations work fine in Safari [Win/Mac]? You'll need quicktime installed..
