How to run the dos demo?

category: general [glöplog]

Hello, I would want to know how to run this demo
http://pouet.net/prod.php?which=777

Under Dosbox emulator it produces the errors
DOS/4GW fatal error (1008): can't load executable format for file nether
or
Stub exec failed: dos4gw.exe No such file or directory

Thanks

you need dos4gw a DOS extender. download it from somewhere (preferable a version released 'round the time the demos was released) and put it into the same folder as the demo executable. that should do it.

being the coder of the demo and as I've tried once to run it in dosbox myself some time ago, I know that this does not do it ;)
I looked up that old stuff on my HDD again and noticed it might have something to to with the data-into-exe-integration tool we used (which was developed by Ys/CUD IIRC).
if I ever have too much time and motivation left I might try to create a version that has the datafiles simply in some folder... except if someone finds a way to run it directly.
or I could fire up my old P200 and somehow provide a vidcapture...

haha, I just noticed that the prod-number for this somehwat devilish themed (eew, we sure were younger back then... ;)) demo is 777.
if everyone made his/her scene-homework you know the correlation of 666, 777 and how the 1911 got into the razor 1911 groupname ;)

ok, doesn't help making this demo run.
I might try to get my hands on this issue tomorrow.

I just tried to run it in JPC (with dos4gw.exe downloaded from somewhere). Doesn't work though, all I get is one strange line of output and then it freezes.

hmm, found an unpacked version that seems to start at least with dosbox... until... an MMX check comes into play.
I (pretend to?) somewhere somehow used MMX code there... and that seems something dosbox can't emulate so far which my fast google-search told me.
maybe I also just found it cool back then to check for MMX avaibility without actually using it, who knows ;) for that I'd need to take a deeper look at the code. but not tonight. whenever I look into code after midnight (I remember BP2004) something bad happens!!!

I'll give it a try via an USB stick on this box tomorrow. Maybe it works ... or crashes the machine (like second reality does).

Styx, can you give us the unpacked version? I will run it in bochs or other emulator that supports mmx.
