Might work or not.. Worth a try tho?
http://www.slitaz.org/en/ (I'd go for the lowmem option)

it's a 386, you could draw ascii, type and play some dos games on it. unfortunately it's not booting anymore...

Try getting a phone with a VGA screen at 50€...
On second thought, don't.

I found a Compaq SLT/286 where my dad works a couple months ago - I had to replace to CMOS battery but it works fine now.

ringofyre, i'd rather focus on pendrivelinux.com than slitaz :)
Oh look, slitaz, dsl or puppy all run on an oily rag, on an old machine like r13's with hardly any mem or cd/usb stuff getting anything with an xserver to work'll be interesting anyway.
Maybe a command-line system (debian or ubuntu) with qemu & dosbox (don't know if that needs x) could play demos?

Getting a decent €50 phone with >vga screen is easy enough these days, so long as you don't mind chaining yourself to a contract for a few years. If you need that contract anyway, the phone pretty much comes free. If you don't need that contract, it's going to cost €1000s :)

This phone isn't going to be much of a demo box though, unless you count videos (at which point it becomes a pretty awesome demo box).

For any old PC/laptop: just stick win95 or dos on it, why would you put an old version of linux on there? There's pretty much zero linux demos that would run on it, but tons of dos stuff. Putting linux + dosbox on is like getting an old amiga, installing linux, then trying to run demos under uae.

One day, with my old workmate p01 we found an Amiga 3000 lying on the street, in a almost perfect shape :D

I'm sure tons of working Amiga/Atari/C64 finished their lives into trashcan :(

oh so true...
let us spend one minute of silence to mourn for all the vintage hardware thrown away in perfectly good condition =)

Rez, you're right unfortunately. We rescued an A500 from a bin, basically everything was in the box, then damn thing was immaculate including the warranty card!
I have an a1200 and an a500 at home, both in excellent condition except that there's only one PSU between them.

Both came from a rubbish dump - the guys there look for anything like this and pull it out :) So even if it goes in the bin and the bin is collected by the truck, it's not the end of the road. It's well worth popping into your local tip/recycling centre and asking what old computers they have :D
