psonice, are you using some kind of motion estimation to enhance color depth in images? Or it is just a simple filter?

No motion estimation, it's a simple filter (well, not *that* simple, it's effectively just remapping luminance but with a nice curve to try and preserve whatever is there).

I think motion estimation wouldn't really work here, a lot of the time you want to enhance a very dark scene. So we're talking all of the information in the bottom 2% of the data, in an 8 bit image, on a noisy phone camera sensor. Plus the camera firmware seems to do some very funky stuff to enhance the image itself, so you get motion trails and the like. I'd be a happy man if apple just provided the raw sensor data :)

Out of interest though, how do you think motion estimation could help? I've written some (much more high end ;) software like this for the desktop, and used some motion estimation there, but for motion compensation and removing distortion not low light enhancement.

Btw, version 1.5 just got released, better algo + more demoish effects plus other improvements.

First, suppose the camera were in a tripod, so completely static.

I suppose the camera is something like 20 o 30 fps. If you sum the values of the color of the pixels from more than one image, you should get a better image, like if it were a long exposure. Well, not always true because sensor use to have some bias noticeable at very low intensities (even my dslr camera have it), but in any case you could enhance the image.

So, my idea is that if you can make motion estimation, you could make an average of the images during the time the camera is looking at a similar point.

You know, if you stay quiet enough looking at a building, with just a little bit of handshake, maybe the image could be getting progresively less noisy. Then, if you move the camera to other position, it would get noisy again.

To avoid ghosting, maybe you could compare the image with the previous one by areas, so when there is fast movement, it appears noisy, but the static parts less noisy...

It is just an idea. I'm not sure the iPhone would be able to do this in realtime anyway... it doesn't seem specially easy to do in realtime in a desktop, so maybe it is not possible...

pro: thx :) if you attend revision 2011 you may want to meet supah and unik, pay them (and me) a beer and try to convince them (not me) to make intros again :D

@psonice: you know, I believe most people must think the same... except most people didn't click yet!
I'm sure that will spread by word of mouth. I've already sent the link to a friend who's into similar stuff, I'm sure he'll pass it on too :)

Thanks sanx :) That looks pretty good from a quick 2 minute play. The physics feel right, which is 90% of what makes a pinball game.

How did you find iphone vs. android for it?

Thx ps ;)

iPhone is definitely a more mature platform. The App Store is flawless, even if the review process is very frustrating.
iPhone was the lead platform, but the game was and still is developed on PC/Visual Studio, I'm not a fan of XCode, but I have to admit it improved a lot in the last 2 years.
Free version just reached 2 million downloads.

Android is not as mature, but the horsepower and the motivation is there, as long as you release free+ads software. The Android Market is scary buggy, consumer emails are a nightmare :/

Android has a lot of potential, but it's a bit early still.

We'll see what 2011 will bring.

Sanx: just had another play of that, it's a definite keeper. Left a review ("awesome app, best thing ever, 1*" :D) on the uk store. It's not showing, but the reviews seem pretty messed up lately (a lot of devs are complaining that 5* reviews are going missing particularly for some reason). If it doesn't turn up let me know and I'll do it again.
