ASSEMBLY Summer 2011

category: parties [glöplog]
are there recordings of the compostudio programs from AssemblyTV available anywhere?

here's one video that did not qualify for the short film competition. actually, i hear there was another music video that was not shown, too - this year's results.txt and scene.org archive don't seem to cover non-qualified entries :|
it surprises me that music videos seem to be a disfavored in the asm short film compos. after all, this is not the first occassion of non-qualified or disqualified music videoish entries in short film compos where.. uhh... productions aiming toward ideals other than artistic expression, such as humor have succeeded. what's up with that?

dep, the jury for shortfilm basicly consists of 12-15 year old kids who like shitty humor videos over anything with content.
and the organizers are too fucked up to realize that when the number of entries is less than 15 which is the maximun they will show, it would just make sense to show everything. there's been plenty of discussion whether artistic/different/etc productions should be shown at asm and the organizers have pretty much made it clear that they just want the kids to be entertained. this of course has affected a lot to what kind of productions people even try to make for assembly, making the aim to be even more mainstream.

i guess the reason for not including non-qualified entries in results.txt this year is that finally asm has stopped releasing non-qualified prods?

It's actually quite common to not include disqualified prods with the official releases. That way, artists have a chance to submit the entries at other parties.

nosfe: jury points are a big deciding factor with shortfilm.
The point there is to keep the decision as unbiased as possible, so I am sure that the orga responsible for it will want to obey the scoring as much as possible.
Have a problem? Give feedback to the compoteam instead of talking shit about organizers being "too fucked up".
I am sure that the feedback is appreciated and heard. And improvements can be made once people hear from outsiders what is wrong. :)

Usually it's hard enough to get people in the jury itself so I am not really surprised about the qualification suggestions.
Sorry, don't want to point any fingers in here, but that is how it is.

Unseen/heard entries should of course be available to compete in another compos. I at least would give a flying ..duck if that was prohibited or not, and would release them anywhere i please.

i brought up the subject of assembly releasing non-qualified compo entries years and years ago on the assembly forums. (the old ones that ran on phpbb or something.) the reaction from the organizing was basically "well, if you submit an entry to a compo it means you've decided to release it, and if you're not good enough to qualify then fuck you, we'll release it nonetheless" :)

i didn't check, but i'd be surprised if there's been a change for the better as nosfe says.

while i'm here, i'd also like to congratulate abyss, pehu and the crew for assembly turning 20 years. the devotion they've put into it over the years is remarkable, and the phenomenon shows no signs of slowing down.

also, compo-wise the outcome of the demo compo was pretty much my personal scene highlight of the year. cheers for the thrill :)

ja herrajumala se pehu on hoikka nykyään.

i actually mailed the compo system admin asking about the 'not qualified' and never heard anything back. still have no clue why my prod wasnt shown or why the microsoft pure web sponsor prize was silently cancelled. which is abit disapointing since i actually aimed for cross browser from the start instead of just using webgl. but well, like people have told me: participating with an entry at assembly is always a lottery. :)

reed: results file this year shows no reference to disqualified entries. and neither do the party archives. so i guess they "fixed" that. not sure it's entirely optimal as it is being handled now though. but well, i'm biased. :)

guess the best thing would be to have a "would you like your prod to be publically released even if it doesnt qualified" box to tick when submitting.

The policy on releasing non-qualified entries has been changed this year. If you didn't qualify for the big screen, your entry is no released by us.

Sorry for not announcing it earlier.

PS, please forward your email to abyss at assembly dot org and I'll ask around.

Added to that, I'd love to maybe get some input from the non-group sceners, as well as some graphicians and musicians, and make a real documentary (in the style of Top Gear, not in the style of Walking With Dinosaurs) out of it.

Sounds like a plan!
