5 disks should be enough for everybody?

category: general [glöplog]
just thinking of adding more download links on prods for additional disks. already added 1 more even but i started wondering that ppl would ask for a third and then a forth couz i remember prods that use them..

and no, url for video is not included on that math, thats a diferent link, and is already added, just not visible anywhere couz only gloperators can edit the prods to add that link, but dump the url to the videos on the bbs threads and we'll update them...

i just want to know how many disks download urls are enough.. does 5 sound more then enough? (only the ones in use will be shown anyways..)

can only remember that amiga demo (odyssey?) using 5 disks.. is anything else bigger? (on c64 or speccy maybe...?) anyone knows?

download all disks, pack them together and upload them to scene.org (not you, ps, but the one adding the stuff).

for amiga that's quite doable but for c64 and speccy?.. well, you _could_ just zip everything into 1 file but... would rather keep the original filenames and release integrity then to repack stuff.. imho..

that's an argument i do accept ;-) what about doing it dynamically? like let the user select how many disks and then display that many links/input fields?

i suspect that the pouet.net database design is somewhat fucked up by now :) No BNF for you my friend!
Normalization is for wankers.

Variable number of disks does however seem like the least ugly solution.

SELECT * FROM downloadLinks WHERE demoID=which

...or something?

i doubt that many people care about the aesthetics of the upload form.

so 5 is enough then? :P

5 is the right number for sure
We don't know that.. but probably. In any case, I realize that it would be a pain in the ass to support an arbitrary number of download links per prod... so yes, five should be enough.

Great work btw, ps!

well, it wouldnt be hard to do, just create one more table and change a few forms but im lazy so i go for the restrictive hack way instead :)

5 dicks should be enough for everybody.

Ive never had a demo that spanned more than 4 disks, so 5 should be nuff..

How about a possibility to sort the results of a group search after a date which states which prod was last commented on.. Sometimes I wonder if some old prod of ours has got a new comment and going through all 45 prods kind of sucks :)

As far as I'm aware First Association is the only Speccy demo that even stretches to a second disk. (Of course, all real Spectrum sceners use infinitely long tapes.) Anyhow, 99% of Speccy downloads on Pouet are leeched from my website, and I have no such reservations about repacking demos that are released in stupid formats, so don't expect to see any multiple-zipfile Speccy demos here any time soon :-)

By the way, zxdemo.org uses a separate table for downloads, and it's a right pain in the arse when you want to want to do the listing pages in a single query with a LIMIT 50, but can't because you've got a join that fucks up the numbering.

loaderror: was thinking of adding "lastcomment on" column on groups?which=xx .. its starting to get abit heavy of a page though...

gasman: i've seen several speccy diskmags take 2 disls.. btw, can i do for zxdemo.org / speccy stuff on pouet something similar to what i've done with csdb / c64 ? would allow ppl to go to zxdemo.org counterpart of the scener/group/prod/event faster..
not sure if you want all the traffic and pouet trolls snooping around your site though which is why im asking before implementing..

guess i shouldnt mention the amiga music collection dance diverse 2/suburban base which is 13 disks, plus one with a fix ;)

ps: sure thing, go ahead! Maybe I'll even get round to adding more info fields some day, so there's a bit more to look at beyond what people already see on pouet...

cool, i'll update some .php's tomorow or something.

ps, wouldn't you also have to move all existing download links from the prod table to the download link table, and instead add references to the latter to those prods so that they aren't fetched any differently than newly added ones? That was the pain in the ass I was referring to :)

The databasedesign of pouet is simply amazing >D

it works, its not slow as fuck, im happy.

if any scener mastered in database code wishes to help me out optimizing the thing, he's welcome to take a look at the thing like moT did a couple months ago.

btw, zxdemo id things implemented now.
and so are the 5 downloads thing.

ps: 2 is enough imho, there were SO FEW demos that required more than 2 disks on Atari and Amiga for instance.

For the others, one can still post the url in the comments when needed.
