Hi YOU,

If everything was possible, what would be for YOU, the features you would like to see in what would you consider the BEST demo?

1/ State what is your area of expertise (a coder want something from a demo, a musician something else, a designer something even different, a graphist artist another different thing, a 3D artist ..., ...).

2/ Quote examples from other areas where you've spot what you dream to see in realtime (architecture, music album, painters, advertising, books, ...). Quote your favorite artists artwork, technology, ...

3/ Be precise and your dream will come true as we will work hard at it. Quote links with documentation for coders, musicians, 3D artists, ...

Regards

if you have to ask all of these, then you are already doing it wrong...

I guess I love dream-like scenes since those are something you can relate to and not really see in real life other than as a form of art.
While I am not really often involved in demo projects, I love to do level design for various games because I really like when you get involved with making areas that come in to life, thinking the whole thing inside your head. A nicely modelled area and pacing is able to tell quite a story or raise emotions.. This is why I like a lot of the ASD's doings. Or things like the dream-like forest scene in the golden path that serves as an awesome break from the hectic start.

What I personally want to see someday is a Van Gogh-like paintings in realtime 3D, maybe going trough a scene with the nature and just going around a Escher-like village perhaps that has remains of daily life visible in a warm summer night. Naturally all the 3D geometry would be flt-particle-like abstract and the outlines / geometry would flow as if it there was slight wind.

Ok, so the best demo features this:

Cubes, a lots

Natural textures

Hand painted pictures

Deep scenario

Tits

and Sync using a VBI (Vertical Blank Interrupt) maybe, will see how mfx does it.

Something is missing in my point of view: how to please an international audience?

I mean each national culture has its unique features and particularities, how to handle that?

We want to please every kind of taste a bit so everybody finds something interesting.

What are the specific taste and aesthetics of German, French, English, Polish, Norwegian, Russian, American, Chinese, Finnish, Danish, Swedish, Icelandic, Irish, Spanish, Italian, Greek, ... Difference is wealth.

We are working hard on this project for 2 years now. Most of the requested features are included yet, remains to get this cultural approach required to respect everybody point of view.

And to be more precise, what to do about it, when it comes to the coder point of view? How to please coders from different countries?
If you're *lucky* you'll please a lot of people... But you can't possibly please everyone. Don't even try.

Honestly, it seems rather pointless to ask this anyway. Just make a demo, release it, see how people respond, learn from the criticism and try again. And again. And again.

The BEST demo feature, in my eyes, it's have been released and people appreciate the work behind it. I've tons of little graphic effects & toys, yet, did not managed to have something released yet, for all kind of bad reasons.
decent 3d scenes...

I'd vote for synch, too.

@alter-native: Make a demo with the features that YOU like and are NOT mentioned by us.

Tits, swords and dragons. Oh, and a complete lack of camera floating through Quake corridors.

I'd really like to see a demo that doesn't have that "design by committee" look. Oops.

Ok, ok, a bit more information so you better understand the approach.

First thank to gloom to find out that it's legit.

Second I understand the Iq skepticism, and others, but we don't spend that much time on a demo getting a bad outcome and come back for others years of hard work because in my team we are clever and in yours too.

That means that of course our demo will feature a big part of us, of our soul, of our taste and will definitively be our demo.

But we have reached a stalemate in development so need your ideas to get new ideas (we will implement what we can our own way) and we want to please you the audience too: if it contains what you like, you'll like it, don't you? We make demo because we like making them, but we like to share too.

Another approach about this thread is to see what you all love and want and no it's not a definitive list, it may help over time every newcomer to find out what are the new challenges on the technical side.

It's not a standardization of taste, or techniques, it's a survey to understand what you value NOW. You can then see what you're missing, and what need to be added to make you better and we all learn from each others this way.

As far as I can see, the ideals of the demoscene are very pre-90's: sync like on the c64, Atari ST, ..., Amiga 500, ... dragon, heroic fantasy, raytrace. So we have very well targeted our work since the beginning. We need to add the dragon, thanks for that.

Don't worry the best part of the demo which is the message will definitively be ours.
I value unique, singular artistic vision and dedication to that, even if it's not something that I personally might not like that much.

Add transforming glenz vectors that is really shiny and that do some body popping routines and you have a winner in my eyes + some bubbles with phyiscs.

Great! Perhaps you could point us to one or more of your earlier demos then? Who is "we" btw?

The only true answer short of sync: happy mistakes.

Most of the brilliant looking stuff I've had the privilege to see and/or play with were along the lines of "shit, that's not what we had in mind! ...it looks kinda nice though"
