Sceners in Austria?

category: offtopic [glöplog]
Why are there almost no sceners in Austria? Austrian programmers don't lack skills. There have been courses in graphics programming at Austrian universities in which the students were asked to develop a demo at the end, and many succeeded in doing so. But apparently they only develop a demo once in their lives, for this course, and that was it.

I can only speculate: I recently attended a lecture about business cultures in different countries, and it turned out that after Japan, Austria has the second most "male" culture in the world. That means people are highly competitive and strive for career goals. Perhaps this explains why they are not ready to spend their spare time making demos? After all the most active demoscene countries, such as Finland and Sweden, have a very "female" business culture according to that lecture, which values social security and harmony more than financial success.

You can't force people to fall in love with something, they have to discover it themselves. This is psychology 101, which I was under the impression you knew a little about, but apparently not.

You truly are a complete idiot. :)

Adok: stfu lamer.

I have known many talented Austrian coders in the past.. do your research much?

Adok: Maybe you are scaring them off! :]

Now, seriously, I agree with gloom. We are into our scene cause we love it. Period.

And, of course, some random student that is forced to do a demo or demo-related task in order to pass some courses is not, likely, going to join the demoscene.

I would like that the demoscene in Austria (or in my own country, Spain) would be bigger and more productive but there is nothing that I could do, except coding more stuff, to improve the current situation.

And the demoscene is high competitive, but we are not here mainly for competition sake. We stay because we love demos. And, yes, is also very social but, again, we stay because we love demos.

Adok: Maybe you should do some outreach? See if this lack of sceners improves.. :D

that'll end up with gypsies coding demos in camps!
Devistator: Now tell me how many Austrians have released a demo in the past 10 years.

http://www.clearlycultural.com/geert-hofstede-cultural-dimensions/masculinity/

"Men's values from one country to another contain a dimension from very assertive and competitive and maximally different from women's values on the one side, to modest and caring and similar to women's values on the other. The assertive pole has been called 'masculine' and the modest, caring pole 'feminine'."

What gloom said. I was a tutor for a computer graphics lecture for several years, and I always showed a different demo after every class, the students were amazed by what they could once achieve with the stuff they were learning, none of them became sceners. Perhaps some of them end up being rendering engineers in some game company, we'll never know.

And in addition to that, what everybody else already said: stfu and fuck off, you complete idiot and lamer.

Adok: I was mainly referring to the past.. Amiga, C64. Are you trying to say the Austrian culture has changed that drastically in the last decade?

Devistator: Why are there almost no active PC sceners? Obviously Austrian culture has changed.

No. Or, yes, it probably has, but it's completely irrelevant to the subject matter. The PC is grinding to a halt everywhere, not just in Austria. This -- is obvious.

For a self-declared genius, you are damn stupid.

Oh Adok so you actually do care for what people think and say about you? Are you then going to *try* to pollute all our private blogs with comments, crying out something like (I quote):
Quote:
This person dared to call me "a complete idiot" on an Internet forum!!

Well you know what? Your poor attempt to discredit me in my own blog boldly failed, since I can (oh wonder) moderate comments before they even appear to the public.
If you want to fight, fight here, where nobody else gives the least of all fucks. Welcome to pouët.

Adok, that hofstede study is from the seventies... there are much better studies about business culture.
Also, Germany as well as the UK has a masculinity rate of 66, which is also very high, but they have many many active sceners, how do you explain that?
So your ego is so big that you have a glimse on a study from the 70ies and think you have understood it all and can draw conclusions about whole nations and subcultures..
yeah, right. as easy as that. moron.

also, you seem to like generalizations and stereotypes. schubladendenken makes life so much easier, doesn't it?

Germany is a very large country in European terms (10 times the population of Austria and therefore more than 10 times the population of Finland, Denmark, Norway etc.). Besides, the masculinity is less than in Austria. Compared to Scandinavia Germany has a small scene (in relation to the population). And I did not say masculinity is the one and definite cause of this, I am just speculating what may be the reason.

xTr1m: If you moderate your blog, that is a sign of weakness. I used to publish all the flames I received in my guestbook when I had one years ago and believe me, there have been many. And indeed, there are other (legal) ways to confront you with reality on the Internet apart from your own blog. (Regarding legality, you do know that I could sue you for calling me a "complete idiot" in public, don't you?)
