pouët.net

Open sourcing pouet.net ?

It would and could not replace csdb though. Although _that_ site could also use some fresh paint, but that's beside the point. :)

Perff started a thread about csdb v2 in 2005...

out of pure curiosity how many of these features have been implemented on v2?

Quote:

pouët.net todo list
- add zone's nationality flags on user.php according to sceneID's new "country" user info field
- allow support to change users nationality on sceneID from pouet.net account.php
- fix add.php and update.php to do the vote math ignoring fakeusers votes
- paginate parties.php + allow year sort to be also reversed
- add a possibility to subscribe to certain prods/groups/bbs and receive an update by mail
- facilitate personalized css
- remodel BBS into sections
- populate stats.php with stats
- add cookie/ajax power to groups.php?which= and prodlist.php to show/hide some columns
- do a searchprodlist.php with a textbox input, a multichoice list of all types and platforms, and a way to select sortby up to 3 levels
- add more info on rss prodlistings (groups, type, platform)
- add automatic .rss browser linkage lines as suggested by p01 on bbstopic 2104
- improve lists.php
- add more detail to listitems types (visited parties vs organized parties for demology lists)
- add more listitems types for better demology (visited/organized parties, ex-groups, active/innactive users)
- add related lists info to user.php, group.php, prod.php and submit.php
- add automation to prodid links similar to webtv (for zxdemo, csdb, c64cracktros, plus4emucamp, scene.org fileid)
- update othernfo functionality some more
- add database fields to connect groups to parties/compos they organized (display them on groups.php?which=..)
- integrate demozoo style user and group credits
- allow gfx and music entries?!

Ok, now that Gargaj's lost dev access and any motivation he had left, and nobody in their right mind would want to support Analogue's idea, it seems pouet will remain in 0.9.903 state forever.

Business as usual. Yay.

dubmood: lol i see what you are trying to do there but everybody who knows gargaj from irc or elsewhere also knows he does not need to "mobilize his minions", they are there anyway and they respect him for the work he put into this site and the scene as a whole (as do i, btw). thats no excuse for blindly choosing sides but its not the fact that they do choose but more the fact that they _create_ sides which bothers me a bit...

having that said a mutiny would be if analogue came wandering about claiming himself as the new old admin running the site from now on while revoking the others user-levels and thats exactly what he didnt do. it really looks to me as if he wants to "free" this site which ultimately is a fine goal but the timing is rather bad and the approach rather naive ("lets do it, who's with me?? oh no one really... you all suck im doing it anyway!").

so dont get all emotional and feed the drama-trolls but think of a solution that is good and as fair as possible to everyone and so far kb has leading.
of course open sourcing the site wont make the code automagically better but its not only about the coders access to the sources but also a political decision how the hirarchy on pouet should be managed. i know theres quite some folks who are tired of always seeing the same names running things but i also know thats because those names are the only people who have been here long and deep enough, who put most of the work into what we know as demoscene-infrastructure (and goes far beyond pouet), and are rightfully proud of what they did.
but at least be fair and open and give others a chance to do the same - if they choose not to: well, your point is proven and no one can call you a dictator by any means.
looking for arguments for keeping the site closed on the other hand paints the image that you think you know best whats good for the scene and everybody else is just clueless... that may be true in some cases, not so true in others and might work for quite some time but not without people getting angry over it and stirring drama even if it wasnt the initial intention at all.

please think about what youre fighting for and if its even worth starting a fight over it. in the end its still about replacable web infrastructure, so dont make this personal and just figure out the best possible way for the future of this site and more importantly of the data that it accumulated over the years.

btw pouet.net is one of the snappiest web page out there.

Latency of showing a page is much better than most of the corporate pages and it was basically the only one that worked when I had a crappy wi-fi earlier last year.

That's exactly what someone did do. Read back up. Someone locked Gargaj out of the database and/or more.
now thats just sad.

Pardon me while I quote myself.

well, at least he's not the first frenchie acting like a 5yo on pouet. but yeah, removing garg's user/pass is soooooo childish ;)
yeah, what's that about?! stop being personal and focus on the actual issue..

That's not about gargaj or analog per se, it's just who'd be the better choice for the job.

"Blocker" successfully "bumped" then, I guess. *sigh*

it's not even about that - it's about how we realistically evolve pouet.net within a reasonable timeframe. "we" as in the community as well as the hardworking admins.

Telling people to go make demos about "it". :)

For the record I agree with your sentiments, but by commenting here at all previously, we've both stepped in to the mud pit. Those on the outside think we're silly for entering, and those inside ignore our sanity because we were willing to step in with them. :)
I wonder what give license to anyone to do random "french bashing" on the internet. I do see it more rarely with other nationalities, where the behavior of one is not directly attributed to his or her nationality.

mog, I do however tend to suspect it has to do with most of the data coming from one single source, having no ads to serve or random js libraries to serve from a CDN

Knos: Sorry, the french comment was an after effect of an IRC joke discussion and I forgot that the rest of the conversation wasn't in this thread. No harm meant. (Although you should know that I didn't mean it like that already).

that's where most anti-french sentiments originate at least ;)

well i dont doubt gargajs adminwork at all while i dont know how analogue would perform (if he even wants to) so thats a really easy choice. but my point was not to choose one over the other, thats the completely wrong approach.
its not us vs. them or analogue vs. gargaj (alltho the thread seems to go down that road, sadly), its about if the pouet codebase is open or not. because if thats the case mirroring it on another server is always an option. and no, i dont think and hope thats gonna be needed but HAVING that option sure does change something, doesnt it?

The problem is it seems like things have been phrased so that the codebase becoming open is predicated upon continued development of either 0.9 or v2 only. Then it ends up being a version war as well as a war of personalities.

All I want is to see Pouët not die or go away, but keep changing. Like it or not, it is a historic hub of the scene.
