Agreed :)

And let's FEAST on their LAND! PILLAGE! PLUNDER AND BURN ALL THAT WE FIND! FREE BARBECUE'S AND PINBALL FOR EVERYONE!

havoc:
It's incredibly easy to build a U235 nuke, you only need to pile up enough material to reach the critical mass and kaboom.

The main problems are to get enough U235 (some russian scener with "contacts" around?) and to start the chain reaction exactly when you want.

"let the nukes fly free" :P

you gotta do more than just 'pile it up' cuz if you just toss it all in a bucket it's gonna blow apart before it reaches fully critcal mass and a really big kaboom, so you'll just get al ittle kaboom and fatal radiation poisioning rather than a town-vaporizing kaboom.

Well, a simple gun-assembly bomb (you have a big sphere of Uranium and a small sphere of Uranium and you shoot the small sphere into the big sphere with with high velocity) isn't that hard to make. Not for a nation, at least.. for individuals, probably next to impossible. The bad part about gun assembly is that it's terribly inefficient and requires a lot of fissionable material. A motivated organization with resources could probably do it, and considering the Hiroshima bomb was a gun assembly one..

A more effective bomb design is an implosion device, where you use lenses made of high explosives to squeeze a ball of fissionable material into a smaller, supercritical one. The technical difficulties of this approach are bigger, but so is the boom...

The only thing that is relatively easy, is to understand the theoretical concept of nuclear bomb operation.

In reality, you need:
- Decent amounts of raw radioactive materials (Uranium and/or Plutonium, not available at Walmart afaik)
- They need to be enriched to 'weapons grade', if you intend to do anything more than illuminate your basement.
- Enrichment can only be achieved by using some very sophisticated processes, which require very sophisticated equipment.
- At all times, you have to handle the materials with great care and safe methods, or you'll be found dead with huge blue-ish zits, long before you finish the actual package.
- A great deal of nuclear physics knowledge is needed (duh).
- A great deal of calculations need to be made in order to find the most efficient design. Precision in the timing of detonation is crucial. A three-stage thermonuclear device chain reaction lasts some milliseconds (afaik). Too slow / too fast and you have a fizzle.
- Even the chasing of nuclear weapons uses some rather exotic materials.
- You'll need decent normal (chemical) explosives as well (for implosion).
- I won't even talk about delivery methods (planes / missiles).
- You still have to avoid being detected by the FBI etc. etc.

If that's "incredibly easy" for you, I'd really like to see what you consider difficult.

South afrika managed to build a gun assembly bomb with just a few tens of millions US$ in spending. But OTOH they have rich supplies of natural uranium so the cost of materials may not be included.
