magic: yeah, because nothing else happened in 2008 that could have possibly affected the ASM demo compo. Your analytical-foo is weak.

You mean when a bunch of dudes got free computers in exchange of making some entries for an event nobody really cared about?

Nyuk! Nyuk!

Chucky: what nosfe said. The people at bzm are more likely contributing to Asm compos way more than eg. people watching it abroad are. A bzm beamer affecting the amount of prods in a compo = not just happening.

Also had you been more at bzm, you'd probably know that having a big screen on site has been a running joke for many many years and it'll likely stay that way.. Until some crazy disorganizing scener team does exactly just so. Just like it was this year with the dj desk setup & soundsystem on friday :)

being able to watch all the compos at bzm might even increase the amount of prods as it would make it possible to enjoy compos with a beer in hand.

the early compo schedule freed up the saturday evening for bzm, I think that's a nice start. maybe the restaurants will sell beer to vip ticket holders next year? :)

Just got home from SLAYRadio Gathering, and downloaded all the entries now will watch them in the comming days :)
el-bee: well I know that it has been a joke. but still. its no problem to fix. party-tent, a good generator and presto. I can bet that someone will do it like. soon..

I myself regret not being at asm 2 years in a row.. real life sux.

but well.. problem is that the scenearea is maybe like. eh.. too quiet for some ppl and complains that asm sucks of that. is beer really that important? anyhow this is a issue. asm without bzm will kill asm.. but I also fear that "too much" bzm will also kill asm.

too bad its not possible for orgas to allow beer at the scene area at a moderate limit.

and btw.. we all already know that the scene is dead. (atleast compared when I started.. 88-95 something :)) I'm just happy every year there actually are partys.

You sure aren't. :)

Chucky, no the scene is not dead. Its all about your ability and flexbility.
Satellite One, as a chiptune like still is one of the best.

Grimrock game theme is the best for ages.

First, a huge thank you for everyone who participated in the compos. It means a lot to me.

That said, there were clear disappointments (demo, oldskool demo) and we are thinking about how to encourage more entries to be created for next year. We are open to ideas, so shout out if you have thoughts.

BZM is important. I like a cider (and some beers) just as much as the next guy and hanging out with likeminded folks is fun (thanks Nosfe for great absinth). The BZM disorganizing team did a fantastic job this year incl. a proper cleanup on Sunday. Well done guys!

Finally, big hug for everyone who came and thank you for the compliments on this thread.

P.S. The missing invtro is me being lame and forgetting about it until it was too late. So yeah, we are looking for a team to do this next year - ping me at abyss at assembly dot org if interested in free tickets, vip sauna and whatnots.

Well a slow democompo and oldschool compo can only mean one thing: a KICKASS compo next year.. :)

So.. well I will be there. :)

abyss: the problem with the democompo is probably just a problem for this year.

assembly's democompo has usually been a "main event" in the (pc) demoscene - the best of the year or close to it. the standard is high particularly as there's preselection applied. on the plus side that pushes groups to do their best when they compete. on the minus side, it probably makes some avoid competing unless they know they're bringing their A game - nobody likes getting thrashed. :)

keep in mind that if just one or two of the usual big guns had delivered the compo would have been seen in a very different light. it was a bit light on quantity and there was nothing standout enough to make you walk away remembering it, but it wasnt quite 2008 bad. :)

aside from the general slow decline in standards which every party's release list has suffered from, i'm sure assembly 2014's democompo will be a different deal.

if you're looking to mix things up, maybe mobile needs its own compo again? surely there's enough finns in the business to make that one work out? :)

yeah, i think people making demos for modern mobile platforms do not want to compete with calculators.

I second smash. The demo compo was disappointing only because it was quite short. But there were some quite nice releases, and overall each competing group did *better* than before - think of adaprt, bilotrip and pyrotech. There is no need to shake up things with the demo compo, unless it becomes the party (2001?). In which case god save us all!

Smash vs Navis armwresteling clash coming up again in 2014 ? :)
added on the 2013-08-06 23:45:10 by magic magic
No. You can't live your life attached to the past. The same goes with demos. What was done was done, let our art move on.

So just wrestling then?

Nude wrestling with oils and stuff, like in the old days.

I faintly recall some Jumalauta members doing exactly that.

Well this isssue is resolved already. With just seven entries everyone thinks they have a shot at winning Assembly. For a lot of people this is a dream come true. Change nothing, do nothing and wait. If you'll see a decline which seems a trend, it might be wise to take action. You'll be shocked at the amount of demos which will pop up when people notice the big players somehow didn't got around to release anything at Assembly.

I like when a greek refers to oily-wrestling as "the old days" :)

breakpoint 2005 ... we've got an "aesthetically enhanced" (i.e. Glow) shot of that ... incident during the local-yokel-visiting-hour in our little crappy slideshow of that year :D

Second that.
After all, even the Amiga scene somehow managed to cope with major groups staying absent from the main compos for several years now.
It's like it always was: Walking the walk always beats talking the talk.

Abyss: thanks for a really enjoyable party once again. Also I'd like to mention that the final "turn of all audio and lights" movie was hilarious :)

As for compos with very few entries (it has happened to various compos in the past), if you're happy with extra filler entries, you could just publicly show the number of submitted entries so far, and maybe promise to extend the deadline a few hours if there are less than X amount of entries. That might encourage people to finish their almost-ready stuff or things they don't consider good enough for Assembly (given the initimidating quality of entries sometimes). Granted, that probably will only raise the amount of entries, and not the average quality...
