Scene.org Awards discontinued

category: general [glöplog]
and to be precise: yes, the dub awards is not a lie. And yes, i'd like another scene.org awards-style show, maybe honoring graphics as well and music and who knows what :)

And this would then give, say, 1000-5000e more for attractive first prizes in the demo compo, and also of course in the music and graphics compos etc. according to the orgas' whim. For this to work as a prestigious attraction the prizes must be announced before the party is booked solid.

maybe im a western fat cat with warped norwegian-esque ideas about the value of money, but the point i was trying to make wasn't a wild exaggeration.
1000e in the prize fund (10e on everyone's ticket at a 100 person party) is just not the level of prestige you're talking about. by the time youve spread it across a couple of compos you have a democompo 1st prize of a few hundred e, which isnt exactly "prestige".
to get "prestige prizes" (a few k) at a 100 person demoparty youd need to put 100e on the ticket. thats just not cool.

I mean - the list of jury members are clearly not in any position to judge skill or achievement

so we shouldn't mention that some (yes, plural) people actually have been on the scene.org jury?

But yes, we celebrate people - and maali, you clearly couldn't win anything, not even from my mom!

people who are doing demos for the bitches and bling chose the wrong hobby!
Yeah, we're in it for acquaintanceship with classy ladies and reasonable monetary compensation!

if your demo is really really good, you might make first base and get a lollipop

It might be suitable to the general air of silliness if the lollipops were these or these other ones.
All this talk of money is just losing focus, I don't know how the awards discussion got to this tbh, money has always been just an incentive but the top players in the scene don't really care about money, they have real passion for the demoscene and the competition it brings. The awards were good, run by the people that have real passion for the demoscene (active demosceners who release and have history in the demoscene who know their shit), anything less just wouldn't be the same imho. There seems to be a lot of joke this and that in the demoscene these days along with cheap and nasty prods, i'm all for encouraging people into the scene but also the "new blood" seems to be lazy these days. Bring back the days of real competitive spirit and the awards will naturally follow, everything flows you know..

You dont need money, dont take fame. Don't need no credit card to ride this train

Indeed :) I must add that you can be creative without all this incentive stuff, you just need the passion and ability to believe in yourself. Although the competition element does keep that passion alive. <3 Namaste,

I'd say that demosceners, the ones with skill unlike me, does this for several reasons: the challenge, the competitive elements and the social elements.

Or to put it in another way "it is better to die for the Demoscene than to live for yourself".

I can only speak for myself, but I have a strong feeling that the social aspects, combined with tradition, is what's guiding most active demomakers these days. Competition is fun too, but the challenge-part is probably not what's driving most now. I'm not saying that's a bad thing, that's just how I see it.

From my part it's mostly self-expression though the social aspects do play a role. It's of course nice to win something or place well in the compo, but it's hardly a motivating factor for me. Never has been.

Not really. The days of the "hallmark" prods like "FR-08" or "Lifeforce" or "Media Error" are a few years passed now.
