does ZX Spectrum platform needs to be subdivided?

category: general [glöplog]
ps i will try later. Is there a hires template or everything was drawn in 16x16?

groepaz, make a thread about it;)

agree also. (I would only leave 16k and 48k in the default "zx spectrum", but hey...)

*Weak* agreement from me. I'm satisfied that these categories represent meaningful differences in capabilities, not just minor hardware differences.

My only hesitation is basically what groepaz says. Splitting one platform into five is fine, but if the process is repeated for every other platform that has a few different models, then that would kinda suck. But then again, that's just a slippery slope argument ("we shouldn't do this thing now because it might lead to people making shitty decisions later") and maybe the Spectrum *is* unique in having so many distinct "base configurations" that are all popular choices for demo making.

(Incidentally, there are definitely more than two 16K prods. I've written three myself...)

I'm considering some sort of "subplatform" solution for it (e.g. MS-DOS / MS-DOS+gus would be one platform with GUS being a branch for it, same goes for Windows -> Shader 3.0 or some sort of prerequisite distinction) but at this point I'm a bit unsure how to model a database on it that doesn't make it a massive pain.

going to check the icons.
btw, zx81 icon is broken: http://www.pouet.net/content/styles/001/gfx/types.png (moved 1 pixel to the left)

Indeed it is; I'll fix that in a minute.

Note: when you're making new icons, don't make them on the spritemap, make them separately and I'll compile them together.

But either way don't go nuts about the icons just yet; I'm gonna see what I can come up with the platform-subdivision method.

groepaz, poor banana-boy,

i demand to liquidate pointless sub-categories like
c64,
amiga ocs,
c16,
amiga aga,
vic-20,
amiga ppc
pet
and whatever junk more they made - and put it all into one reasonable "Commodore" category.

something for the start.

I personally prefer the bottommost set. Can you draw "128" icon too?
Wow, nice work.
As for me, the best would be the first or the third set.
Although I would add the 128K description too, into the middle column. ;)
2nd try:

@diver: great work!
I (also) prefer last set, as it's easiest to read on high resolution monitors.

Should we continue this thread?
Don't worry, you delivered the message, but now I have to think about implementation aspects. Splitting the category up now to 5 different ones sounds like a considerable amount of work for the glöperators and I'd like to avoid that.

bump. not to be forgotten. :)) (this reminded me)

@gargaj, shout if you need some help.
as agreed on pages before, you can put everything from current "zx spectrum" to "zx spectrum 128k", and I believe that there will be an army of volunteers that can provide lists (simple CSV file with prod_id,new_platform_id) for everything that doesn't belong to the zx 128k.

i was planning to suggest to grab the platform separation from demozoo, but I just realised that gasman didn't do it's job there. ;))

Maybe a bot that will handle "fixme" requests will be better. One by one, all the prods will be categorized. (Double request with different categories should be overlooked by an admin.)

Yes, these are prods must be labelled like "not Spectrum" or "ZX with steroids"

Your prods that don't work without General Sound or TS-conf will go to "not Spectrum" earlier.
купи General Sound, рязанский нищеброд=)
то же относится к твоей The Board II
