Oric Cumulus Preorder (SD Card floppy emulator)

category: general [glöplog]

At Solskogen and Kindergarden there was people asking me how difficult it was to get an Oric up and running so they could watch our demos or perhaps code one.

The usual answer is: Finding an Oric is easy (just check ebay.com or leboncoin.fr) the difficulty is finding a working floppy disk drive and controller.

Last year somebody designed a SD card based replacement which basically is the functional equivalent of a HxC Floppy Emulator, except it comes with the missing part: The disk controller part (HxC only emulates a floppy drive, Cumulus emulates the floppy drive and the WDC chip and bus logic as well).

We are going to have a batch of these devices produced, and right now we need to know how many we should build, so we have open a pre-order thread on the Defence Force forums.

If you are interested, please go to http://forum.defence-force.org/viewtopic.php?f=23&t=1012 where there's more details about the whole operation :)

The whole hardware documentation/firmware is available, so technically you can build your own if you want, but from a cost point of view that's probably going to be less efficient, so if you really want one you should probably jump on the opportunity!

Thanks! And don't hesitate to share the post, the more people the lower the final price and the more motivation for new oric demos and games :)

Just to indicate that the production has started, and the first devices have been sent.

If everything goes according to the plans, there will be at least one at PayBack with an Oric demo in the compo.
