Lizardking lead

category: music [glöplog]
The lead synth samples used by Lizardking were famous not only because his tunes were popular, but also because "everyone" ripped them. Does anyone know which synth(s) they're from? Are they presets? Here's an example from a studio album that uses synths rather than samples according to an interview IIRC: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=18Yl6fMMQjY (lead starts after 16 seconds) and one of his modules: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zk07cMGblXk (different lead starts right away)

He lists the synthesizers he use in the sample texts of several modules, for example this:

following synths were
used for this tune:
korg wavestation ex,
roland alpha juno ii,
akai x7000. and
following machines
were used for the
drums&percussion:
akai xr10, roland r8,
solton ms5 and
ensoniq vfx-sd1.

The lead synth is pretty much a square wave with pulse width modulation, and you should be able to replicate it quite easily with a number of synths/vsts.

To get the attack right for the lead in the second track you will probably need to either use a pitch envelope for the oscillators, or set a fast glide/portamento time and use a short overlapping sequence of <the note one octave below the actual note in the melody><the note in the melody>.
Considering that it is a module, I'm guessing the second technique will sound most authentic.

PWM is probably part of it, but it doesn't have the straight C64 sound, so I suspect there's something more, especially in the first lead. Its hollowness almost sounds sync-like at times. Thanks for the pitch envelope trick, but I'm trying to find the source of the samples, not replicate the way he used tracker effects. :)

it is an often used lead in spacesynth music. and it's available as default preset in one of the VSTs mentioned in these tutorials. cant exactly recall which one cos i dont have them installed anymore. but yeah, it's not really rocket science to do it with whatever vst you fancy.

also what's a c64 gotta do with this? it's not sid music
and marco rochowski > lizardking when it comes to "doskpop"

That synth lead is from a Roland Juno 2, one of the factory sounds. I have them sampled in high resolution, multisamples, if anyone wants them.

The other leads that sound more flanged, most of them are from Korg Wavestation.. You can get the Korg Wavestation as a VST from Korg Legacy. ZZlead is good among other things, but you can take any lead on that synth and flange it, with solo/legato and you should get the desired effect.

Best wishes
Gustaf
@Lizardking

Is it a same than Vogue used on Gravis Commercial? Aka ambient light.xm?

That would be much appreciated! :)

And yes, the Korg M1 / Wavestation VSTis are pretty much the go-to plugins if you want to find dozens of classic mod sounds...
I remember when i were assebly 94 and my idol lizardking were there...selling his c-casettes...i gave some money to my friend and asking to buy that c-casette from lizardking... :D i was just stoned whe i saw my idol there :D

Thanks Gustaf! I suspected Wavestation for the second lead, but was missing the flanger. :) I guess this is the Juno patch? http://www.synthmania.com/Roland%20MKS-50/Audio/Factory%20examples/A61%20LeadSynth2.mp3

tFt: oh, dear god. I think this (and some other mods on AMP) was never meant to be played outside a certain small town. The power of the internet. :)

The Korg Wavestation is an awesome lead machine.
There´s a nearly complete emulation of the synthesis on Amiga:

Well, I think the Wavestation is/was also the king of pad sounds :)
hmm, this thread makes me want to switch it on again soon..

Saga Musix: Did you get the samples?

You're looking for a synth that let's you hard or soft sync the VCO's. That's basicly where the character derives from.

I.e. Alphatron: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZuIJTi64m7U

rpfr: The character comes from the Alpha Juno's "sawtooth PWM".

That's what keeps the sound moving but the overtones are actually coming from one to two octaves hard synced VCO's. Which adds the often sought after slightly steppy "meooww" thing.

absence: Nope, I was waiting for him to post them here. :)
Saga: ok!
rpfr: Are you sure we're talking about the same synth? Alpha Juno does not have osc sync. :)

Lizardking, I'm also interested in the sample pack. I've been a fan since Crystal Dream 2. Much appreciated! You do great work.
